Obituary

Kim Ione Melling:  November 16th, 1957- September 4th, 2025

Kim Ione Melling, beloved mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, passed away on September 4th, 2025, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, surrounded by her family, after a short battle with lung cancer.

Kim was born on November 16th, 1957, to Irving "Sonny" Melling and Leona (Goplin) Melling, Kim spent nearly her entire life in Hettinger, where she was known for her strong spirit, sharp wit, and fiery sense of humor. Over the years, she wore many hats — bartender, manager, farmer and rancher, animal lover — but perhaps none more proudly than that of mother to her daughter, Erin, who was the greatest joy of her life.

Kim married Dalton Papka in 1979, and together they welcomed Erin, who became Kim's constant source of pride, love, and laughter. Although Dalton and Kim's marriage did not last, their love for one another was undeniable and they remained lifelong friends, with Dalton at her side to the very end.

Many in the community will remember Kim from her years managing the American Legion, where she famously dubbed it the "Home of the Crabby Hour" — a phrase that perfectly captured her sense of humor and unfiltered wit and sarcasm. She had a natural gift for making people feel at ease, even if it came with a bit of sass.

Kim's deep bond with her family extended beyond her home. She also worked alongside her father and brother in their farming and ranching operations for many years, embodying the hardworking, no-nonsense nature she was known for.

Kim's love for animals was a lifelong passion. From cats and dogs to pigs, cows, birds, and even a raccoon, she welcomed all creatures with open arms and a generous heart.

Those who knew Kim will remember her as tough, loyal, and funny, a woman who didn't sugarcoat the truth, but who loved deeply and without reservation.

Grateful to have shared her life are her daughter, Erin Melling of Belle Fourche SD, and her dad, Dalton Papka of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin; sister Pamela Hall of Parker CO; nieces, Lexy (Dan) Cardonne and her children Kaden and Isaac Cardonne of Fort Collins CO; Hannah (Tom) Barry  and her children, Tommy, Lilly, and Jude Barry of Aurora Colorado; nephew, Jeremy Hall of Parker CO; special friend and cousin Bill (Deb) Ecker, of Hettinger ND and numerous cousins, nieces and nephew, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Leona Melling; father, Irving "Sonny" Melling; and brother Scott Melling.

Kim was adamant that she did not want a funeral, but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Condolences can be sent to Erin Melling: 2123 Conifer Loop, Belle Fourche, SD 57717.
