Kenneth John Day, "Kenny" to all who knew him was born on Jan. 15, 1934 to Delbert and Bernice (Griffith) Day at Dupree, SD. As a child he lived on a ranch outside of Dupree and attended the Fairview School. At age 11, following the passing of his mother, he resided with his Aunt and Uncle, Neva and Charles Samuelson near Faith and attended school in Faith. He lived with other relatives as well and became a top hand on local ranches in his youth.
After serving in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1956 to 1958, he returned home and worked for local ranchers in the Faith, Dupree, Cody, WY area as well as in Montana. During this time he joined the life of rodeo, which was his true love. He traveled with the Eddie Bachman Wild West Shows in Iowa, Nebraska and the Upper Midwest. He was a member of the SDRA and the NRCA, winning many buckles and championships in his Rodeo Career. In later years, he enjoyed following youth rodeo events and traveled many miles to encourage his family and others who participated.
He met his wife to be, Debbie in the late 1960's and they were married on Nov. 4, 1974 at Pierre, SD. To this union two sons were born. They settled on their present ranch on the Cheyenne River southeast of Howes in 1978. There, Kenny successfully raised cattle and loved working with his horses, and gained the respect in his community as one of Western South Dakota's true cowboys. A hand shake with Kenny Day and you knew the deal stood.
As a faithful member of AA for over 32 years, he has helped many overcome their problems and walk by their side. He had a special love for his family and reveled in the glory of all of the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His other passions were his love of horses, rodeo, his guitar and singing. He was baptized on Sept. 5th in Faith. Kenny is on his final trail ride, but will not be forgotten.
Keeping his memory most near are his wife Debbie and son Dustin of Howes, stepson; Earl (Cheryl) Knight, Rio Rancho, NM, stepdaughters; Darla (Mark) Shupick, Eagle Butte, Carla Knight (Jay Blount), Pierre, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, brothers; Bud (Iris) Day, Meadow, Sam (JaLyn) Bruno, Kansas City, MO, sisters; Helen (Dale) Packer, Rapid City, Mary (Dick) DeYoe, Belle Fourche, aunt; Neva Samuelson, Spearfish, uncle: Darrell (Marlene) Griffith, Faith as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
