It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Kay Witkowski, who passed away on July 15, 2026 at the age of 79.

Born on May 31, 1947 in Elgin, ND, Karen lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and love for family and friends. After graduating from Dickinson State College, she spent many years as an educator, mentor, laboratory and x-ray technician.  She held offices as Grant County Commissioner and Grant County Superintendent of Schools.  She was known for her playful, loving spirit with her nieces and nephews as well as her witty dry humor.  Karen found joy in her horses, cats, traveling, painting, and spending time on the family farm.

She is survived by her husband Richard Witkowski, brothers and sisters, Gene (Sharon) Schmitz, Culbertson MT;  LeAnn (Brad) Dettmann, Spokane WA;  Tracy (SuAnn) Schmitz, Elgin ND;  Holli Alladin, Cannon Falls, MN;  sisters-in-law, Roberta Schmitz, Elgin ND;  Sandra Schmitz (Marvin Kubousek), Bismarck, ND; Carlotta Bender, Bismarck, ND; and brother-in-law Les (Suzanne) Witkowski. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Patricia Schmitz; two brothers, Wayne Schmitz and Dennis Schmitz; and her niece Heather DenBoer.

Karen will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Mountain Time on Wednesday, July 22,  2026 at St Theresa Catholic Church, Carson, ND.  Memorial donations can be made to the Jacobson Memorial Hospital Care Center.
