Julia (Julie) Dorthy Kvanvig, 98, formerly of Hettinger ND, passed away August 6, 2021 at Halstad Living Center in Halstad, MN .

Memorial services for Julia will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the Hettinger Lutheran Church in Hettinger, ND.  Pastor Selva Periannan will officiate with burial to follow in the Hettinger Cemetery.

She was born March 10, 1923 to Elmer and Agnes (Tobiason) Severson in Perkins County, South Dakota. She attended schools in Perkins County, SD, Brandon, SD, Valley Springs, SD, and graduated high school in Hettinger, ND.

She married Arthur O Kvanvig on December 18, 1943. They had 8 children.

For most of her life she was a homemaker, childcare provider, and parent. Before she was married, she worked at the Lake View Cafe and after Art died, she worked as a school cook and did childcare. She formed long term bonds with the children in her care and one of those children, Wendy, still thinks of her as a second mom. She enjoyed receiving cards, letters, pictures, and visits from these children as they grew and had families of their own.

She was a great cook and baker. She was especially known for her "Kvanvig" dip, donuts, and caramel rolls. Cooking for a large family, especially growing boys, meant she baked bread several times a week.

She enjoyed feeding birds, playing cards, going on picnics, and working in her yard and garden. Being a farm girl, later in life, she enjoyed rides in the country so she could monitor the progress of the crops and was especially watchful for the time when the trees started to bud in the spring.

Always concerned about family and friends, as she and her friends aged, she made early morning telephone calls to make sure they were OK.

Julie was active in the Hettinger Lutheran Church, Eagles, VFW Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors, the Senior Citizens Center, and the Clothes Closet.

In 2014, she moved to Elim Care Center in Fargo, ND. After a fire at Elim, she relocated in 2020 to the Halstad Living Center in Halstad, MN. Julie loved her caregivers and other residents.  They became a second family and they treated her with love and affection. She loved the many visits from her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives, friends, and Pastor Mark and Emily from her current church, North Buffalo Lutheran.  Although Julie's life was marked by several losses, she carried on with dignity and grace and an immense love for her family.

She is survived by children Russell (Geri) Kvanvig , Dennis (Marie) Kvanvig, Lynda (Bob) Backman, Steve Kvanvig, Amy Mason, and daughter-in-law Susan Kvanvig.

Grandchildren Travis Vollweiler, Mike (Sue) Kvanvig, Michelle (Dave) Sherven, Angela (Ryan) Nannenga, Gretchen (Doug) Lupher, Dani (Ryan) Bohnsack, Julie (Kelly) Krabbenhoft, Jill (Chad) Eddy, Amanda Mason, and Elizabeth Mason.

She was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Agnes Severson, husband Arthur, brother Orven Severson, sisters Earlene Bartling and Elsie Severson, sons Ardy(Pete), Dan and daughter Karol, grandson Tom Kvanvig, his wife Stacie and their son Daniel, her special friend Bennie Davidson, and many other friends, relatives, and special pets.
