Oct. 12th at 2 PM at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton, WY. Mr. Reed passed away early Friday morning, Oct. 7th at the Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center.

John Henderson Reed was born on Aug. 22, 1908 in a rock house along the banks of the North Platte River near Oshkosh, Nebraska to John C. and Alta (Henderson) Reed. He grew up in the Sandhills of Nebraska and received his early education in a country school. Adventuresome at a young age, he hopped a freight train at age 16 and traveled to California, Washington and into Canada before returning to the Sandhills.

After eloping to Raton, NM, he and Edna June Anderson were married there on Oct. 16, 1931. They returned to ranch on the Davis ranch on Blue Creek north of Oshkosh. Their family of two sons and two daughters were born at Oshkosh. He later ranched near Hulett, WY and on Indian Creek near Belle Fourche, SD.

In 1944 he began his training as a brand inspector in Denver while working the sale ring in Lusk, WY. From there he worked as an inspector in Casper, Gillette, Torrington and the Omaha Stockyards. From Omaha, he came back to work for the South Dakota Stockgrowers in their inspection program and worked at Fort Pierre and Lemmon, retiring there in 1980.

John loved the ranchlife, being around cattlemen, the livestock and was an excellent roper and cowboy in his day. He always said he should have stayed in the Sandhills if he wanted to raise livestock. John and Edna later moved to Riverton, WY where she passed away in 1986. He continued to live in Riverton until Aug of 2000 when he entered the Belle Fourche Health Care Center.

Grateful for sharing his life are his sons and daughters in law, John C. and Dee Reed of Riverton, Jim A. and Minnie Reed, Belle Fourche, four grandchildren; Barbara Jean Whisenhunt, McLeod, OK, Joel Icenhour, South Carolina, Debbie French, Phoenix, AZ and John Reed Holloway, of Newcastle, WY with the U S Army in Iraq.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and two daughters, June Icenhour, and Karolyn Dschak, two sisters, Hazel Twiford and Helen Freed.

Funeral arrangements were placed in the care of Funeral Home of the Northern Hills, Eldon Jensen Family Funeral Homes of Caring, Belle Fourche
