The Graveside service for Jeanette Veitz, of Elgin, will be held at 11:am CT (10:00am MT) on Saturday, June 3, at the Stone Cemetery southwest of Mandan.
Jeanette E. Rask was born August 25, 1948, in Mandan, ND, to Theodore and Esther (Bethke) Rask. She was raised on a farm southwest of Mandan and in 1966 she graduated from Mandan High School. Jeanette then attended nurses training at Dickinson (ND) State College.
On October 12, 1967, Jeanette married Harlan J. Veitz in Mandan and they made their home in Elgin, ND, where she worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Lorenzen Memorial Hospital. She eventually retired from nursing to raise their two daughters. Later, she assisted Harlan by working at the service station they owned and operated in Elgin.
Harlan died on September 14, 1992, and Jeanette continued to make her home in Elgin.
Jeanette faced many challenges in life including living with rheumatoid arthritis for over 20 years. Her final challenge came in March of 2016 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. She opted for no treatment, choosing quality of life over quantity. Jeanette kept her diagnosis quiet as she did not want people to treat her differently.
In September, Jeanette moved to Fargo to live with her daughter and family while receiving care through Hospice of the Red River Valley. An animal lover, she quickly bonded with the family basset hound. In November, Jeanette fractured her hip and was admitted to the Palliative Care Unit at Sanford Health in Fargo. She then transitioned to Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, where she died on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at the age of 68.
Jeanette is survived by her daughters, Janell (Chris) Martin and Colleen (Kevin) Lanners; two grandchildren, Grace and James Lanners; a sister, Ann (Don) Brunmeier; sisters and brothers-in-law, Esther Kuehn, Violet Veitz, Vernon (Ardella) Veitz, Clarence (Alverna) Veitz, and Judy Veitz; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; 3 infant brothers; a sister, Angela Graner; and 4 brothers- in-law, Leland Graner, Simon Kuehn, Walter Veitz and Rudy Veitz.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Jacobson Memorial Hospital Foundation, Elgin, or your local Hospice.
