Irene Scoular, 92, longtime Lemmon, SD resident passed away at the 5 Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon on Saturday, June 4, 2022

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 10:30 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon, SD.  Fr. Adam Hofer will officiate and burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon.  Visitation will be Monday, June 13, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary/Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. all at the St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Irene Christina Hess was born to Nickolas and Christina (Martin) Hess on May 12, 1930 in Lemmon, South Dakota.  She attended school in Lemmon and graduated from Lemmon High School.

Irene was united in marriage to Harold Scoular on April 12, 1950.  They started their family life in Lemmon and were blessed with six children.  Over the years she took in babysitting, worked at the Bank of Lemmon (now Dacotah Bank) and at the Live Center.

In her younger days Irene was an outstanding baker and enjoyed sharing all her homemade goodies with everyone.  She also had fun playing board games and card games with her children and grandchildren.  Over the years Irene enjoyed traveling to see her children and grandchildren.  She was an avid gardener and for many years tended a large garden that provided home grown vegetables for her family.  Irene also enjoyed embroidering and made sure that each grandchild received a handmade set of dishtowels embroidered with love.

Irene is survived by her children:  Barbara Heupel of Bismarck, ND; Brian (Neva) Scoular of Lemmon, SD; Bev Houghton of Hettinger ND; Brenda (Kevin) VanMeter of Aberdeen, SD and Blair (Colleen) Scoular of Aberdeen, SD.  Her grandchildren:  Gregg (Amanda) Heupel, Jennifer (Corey) Filibeck, Samantha (Nathan) Damm, Christina Heupel, Tracy Heupel, Ryan (Rondi) Scoular, Leah (Josh) Groethe, John (Penny Nester) Houghton, Sarah (Nick) Timm, Katie (Brandon) Larson, Jessica Scoular, Joanna Scoular, Andrea VanMeter, Nicholas Scoular and Hailey Scoular.  Her great grandchildren:  Matthew, Brandon, Shane, Kaleb, Kenneth, Zachary, Natalie, Brittani, Conner, Kimber, Kaylee, Rylee, Jeter, Max, Kye, Amos, Emiline, Adelaide, Payton, Tucker and Zachary and great-great grandchild:  Anna.  She is also survived by her In-Laws:  Jenny Lee Hess, Bernice Hess, Eugene (Barbara) Scoular and Marlene (Jim) Uhrig.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, son Brad, son-in-law John Houghton and great grandson David Heupel.  She was also preceded in death by her siblings:  Elizabeth Hess, Matthew (Margaret) Hess, Elizabeth (Frank) Schackow, Anna Hess, Mary (Frank) Biel, Katherine (Frank) Goeres, Barbara Hess, Nicholas, Jr. (Myrtle) Hess, John (Katherine) Hess, Rose (Van) Boynton, James (Ardess) Hess, Peter Hess, Frank Hess, Joseph Christian Hess and Joseph Albert Hess.

We know that we can't have you but we're happy knowing that the angels finally have you back.  Goodbye to a wonderful woman and a beautiful mother.  She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Lemmon Lion's Club or the VFW Auxiliary Cancer Bag Project.
