Funeral services for Huldina Schatz, age 94, of Glen Ullin, ND, formerly of Elgin, ND, will be held at 1:00 p.m. MT on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Hope Congregational Church in Elgin, ND. Rev. Bill Bradley will officiate with burial to follow in the Congregational Cemetery in Elgin.
Huldina (Scheuffele) Schatz was born on October 15, 1920 in the Hebron, ND area. She was the oldest of five children born to Fred and Magdalena Scheuffele.
Huldina often said "I'm made of tough stuff". Growing up on the North Dakota prairie, as the eldest of five children, one had to have been made of 'tough stuff'. She graduated with an eighth grade education and always wished she could have gone to high school.
She became the 'hired girl' for several families. One of those families is where she met her future husband, Richard Schatz. They were married April 18, 1943, and farmed north of Elgin. Raising chickens, growing a large garden and always trying new recipes, Huldina was known as a great cook. She loved to prepare kuchen, caramel rolls, bread and anything baked.
Huldina thrived with the friends she made in the Antelope Homemakers Club and the Ladies Aide at church. Making noodles and embroidering towels for the hospital auxiliary gave her joy. Her smile was infectious and her love for others was evident in much of the caregiving she did.
When Richard and Huldina left the farm, she began working as a Green Thumb at the Elgin Community Center. She took great pride in helping keep the center clean and ready for the next event for seventeen years.
After having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Huldina spent seven happy years at the assisted living center, Dakota Hills, Elgin, ND. She spent the remaining nearly eleven years at Marion Manor Healthcare Center, Glen Ullin, ND with loving caregivers and staff.
Huldina passed away on Wednesday morning, September 16, 2015 at the Marian Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin, ND.
She is survived by her children, Jeanette Schatz, Nashville, TN, Dean (Susan) Schatz, Spring Hill, TN, Dale Schatz, Elgin, ND and Gerry (Rhonda) Schatz, Beulah, ND; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard Schatz; two sisters, Clara Schneider and Florence Brookshire; and two brothers, Rueben Scheuffele and Larry Scheuffele.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2015 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
