Howard moved to California at a young age living with his family until finishing school and entering the Navy. Howard's wife of 41 years was Elaine Stagl. Howard and Elaine lived in many states over the years including California, Oregon, Utah, Nevada and finally retiring and settling down in 2002 in Hettinger, North Dakota.

Howard was a private person he enjoyed going on long drives, reading, and visiting with family and friends. He was an exceptional person who was loved and respected by family and friends. He provided well for his children and wife teaching us many things to numerous to mention. Although his children and grandchildren may not realize this yet his quest for knowledge has lead us to who we have become. As children he took us many places from the mountains to the sea and everywhere in between leaving us with memories and knowledge of places most people only see in books or movies. His stories, values, and lessons taught will live on through us all.

Being a quiet private person Howard's final wish was to have a private family gathering. This was honored and a family gathering was held at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. Howard was able to say his personal goodbyes over the last few months of his 10 year battle with cancer and various health problems.
