Obituary

Funeral services for Herbert Blumhardt, age 92, of Elgin, ND will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Hope Congregational Church in Elgin, ND. Pastor Ellis Ryherd and Pastor Bill Bradley will officiate with burial at the Hope Congregational Cemetery in Elgin.

Herbert Blumhardt was born on September 10, 1917 to Gottlieb and Rosina (Schroeder) Blumhardt near Elgin, ND. He attended school through the 8th grade in the German School district. Following his schooling, he worked on the farm until the drought in the 1930's forced him to find work on the railroads in Missoula, MT in 1936.

Herbert then served in the Civil Conservation Corps in 1936 – 1937. His work in the CCC's took him to Kramer, ND (near the Canadian Border), where he helped build a dam, chop down trees and build fences. He then returned to Grant County and worked for area farmers as a hired hand.

In 1939, Herbert started working at the Ford Garage in Elgin. In February of 1943, Herbert purchased the old Grusie place. He was then united in marriage to Elsie Heupel, on June 30, 1943, in New Leipzig, ND. In 1952, the family relocated their farming operation one mile east to the original Blumhardt homestead, near the Heart Butte Dam.

Herbert and Elsie farmed from 1943 to 1980, raising cattle, milk cows, hogs, poultry and a variety of crops. In 1976 they moved to Elgin, but continued to work on the farm.

Herbert was quick-witted, intelligent, honest and hardworking, who was productive as long as his health allowed. He enjoyed reading, fishing, driving tractor, listening to old time and gospel music, and especially visiting with friends and neighbors.

Herbert passed from this life on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Jacobson Memorial Hospital in Elgin.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elsie, Elgin, ND; two sons, Eugene (Diana) Blumhardt, Fargo, ND and Orville Blumhardt, Milwaukee, OR; two daughters, Odella (Robert) Sanborn, Vancouver, WA and Lynette (Robert) Hendrickson, Bismarck, ND; five grandchildren, Zachary Heupel, Kevin (Rachel) Blumhardt, Ryan Blumhardt, Tanya (Jeremy) Disrud and Tammy Blumhardt; two step-grandchildren, Nathan (Dawn) Hendrickson and Angie (Randy) Evans; two great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Will, Elgin, ND; one brother, Arnold (Lorraine) Blumhardt, Billings, MT; and one sister-in-law, Katherine Blumhardt, Laurel, MT.
