HELEN IRENE BURWICK was born January 26, 1923 to Ole and Hanna (Bjorndahl) Burwick. She was one of ten children. The family moved from their farm near New England to Mott where Irene graduated from Mott Lincoln High School at the age of 16. She then earned her teacher's certification at Dickinson State College and returned to Mott where she taught in a one-room school house north of town. One of her students was older than she was.
She married Ed Vukelic and they had five children. When most of them were in grade school, Irene started a 30-year career with the Farmers Home Administration.
After Ed's death in 1984, she moved to Bismarck and became very close to Ole Kraav. Together they traveled to his native Estonia and to Norway, where Irene's mother lived as a child. A proud Norwegian, Irene made excellent lefse but thankfully, did not like lutefisk. She excelled at duplicate bridge, and was a gold star quilter as many of her children and grandchildren can attest.
She was the epitome of someone who cared more about others than herself. She was always quick with compliments. Because she loved to laugh and was quick-witted, she was fun to be around.
Irene passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Mott Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home.
She is survived by her sister Bernice Gaydos; her children Vivian (Ardeen) Wolfe, William, James (Pamela), Mark (Debbie), and Francine (Neil) Heinle; eleven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband Edward; her brothers, Arvil, Oliver, Vernon and Karnes; sisters, Lena Heick, Della Segesman, Geneva Affolter Nelsen, and Florence Tessier; and recently, her daughter-in-law Elaine Vukelic.
Memorials are preferred to the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Mott, ND.
