Helen Barber Cash, age 98, died on Friday, July 8 at Diana Palm's Assisted living in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.
Helen was born on May 18, 1907 in Hetland S.D. to James Barber and Lucia Johnson Barber. She grew up in Hetland and graduated from Hetland High School. She then attended Madison State College and later graduated from South Dakota State College in Brookings, S.D. with a teaching degree. Her first teaching position was in Junius, S.D.
Helen was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Cash on October 26, 1929 at Scottland, S.D. The couple made their home in Bruce, S.D. where Bob taught school, thankful for a job during the depression. Their first daughter, Marlys, was born during this time and Helen devoted her time to taking care of her family. After six years in Bruce, they moved to Ethan, S.D. where Bob was superintendent of schools. Their second child, Robert (Bob) was born.
When war was declared, the family moved to Paris, Illinois. Their next move was to the Twin Cities in Minnesota where their third child, Marilyn, was born.
After the war, the family moved to Harrold, S.D. and Helen returned to teaching. They moved to Brookings S.D., back to Harrold S.D. and finally to Wosley S.D. where they both taught for thirteen years.
The couple retired in Huron, S.D. After the death of her husband, Helen moved to Spearfish S.D. in 1996
Helen is survived by her children; Marlys (Kenneth) Marso of Spearfish, Bob (Donna) Cash of Richland, W.A. and Marilyn (Ron) Schwans of Belle Fourche, S.D. Her brother, Del (Bernice) Barber of Omaha, N.E., 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and also at 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at St. Joseph's Catholic in Spearfish. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, July 13, 2005 and Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 14, 2005 at 10:00 AM, both at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will be at Hetland Cemetery on July 15, 2005 at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Northern Hills, 1440 N. Main St., Spearfish, S.D.
Services are under the guidance of Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.
