HAZEL HAUGE was born on January 5, 1920 to Alfred and Esther (Christensen) Hauge, of Meadow, SD. She attended grade school near her family's farm and later graduated from Lemmon High School in 1939. Following graduation, she worked as a waitress at the Aristo Luncheonette in Lemmon. It was there that she met Clayton A. "Bud" Bartell. On October 22, 1941 Hazel married Bud at her parent's home. Together they farmed, ranched and raised their six children, four miles west of Shadehill, SD.

Hazel was a member of the Rosebud Lutheran Church, Ladies Aide and the Lakeside Ladies Extension Club. Her family enjoyed traveling to rodeos and having picnics with neighbors and friends. She was always busy with her family, being a farm-wife and having her grandchildren around. She sewed many of the clothes for her children and grandchildren. Hazel was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking many different treats, making lefse, milk mush and her famous potato dumplings. During Halloween, she was known as the "popcorn ball Queen". Hazel always brought snacks out to the fields for her family as they worked. She enjoyed raising, butchering and frying chicken. Her other hobbies included crocheting afghans for all of her children and grandchildren, gardening, planting and taking care of her many flowers. Hazel loved to remodel and she was not afraid of taking on any carpentry project. She enjoyed decorating and redecorating her home. Bud died on March 17, 1983 and Hazel continued to live on the farm until 1989. She moved into Lemmon and lived the remainder of her life there. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt and friend to all who knew her. She will be forever missed by those who've been blessed to have shared her life.

Hazel Bartell died on October 30, 2005 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND after a 7 year courageous battle with cancer.
