The summer after graduation he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and worked near Lake Metigoshe and the ND Peace Gardens for $30 a month, of which he was allowed to keep $5, with the remaining $25 being sent back to his parents. After his basic training in Louisiana he was stationed in Australia and Guadalcanal, seeing over 600 days of combat during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Returning to North Dakota, he met Edna Lee from Dodge, ND at a dance and they were united in marriage on February 10, 1946 in Hazen. Following their marriage, they moved to Carson, ND where he partnered with his brother, Edwin, in the Krause's Super Value, which he operated until his retirement in 1984.
