Harold G. Horman age 84 of rural Belle Fourche, died Sunday evening November 13th, 2005 at his ranch north of Belle Fourche, surrounded by his wife and family.
The funeral service will be held 1pm Friday at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche, with Pastor Paul Howard officiating. There will be no visitation.
Harold (Toar) Gordon Horman was born December 13, 1920 to Ida Rosenthal and William (Slim) Horman at the family home on Elkhorn Street, in Belle Fourche SD. Toar attended school in Belle Fourche and helped his dad on the ranch. An old friend A.L. Erickson gave "Toar" the nickname to Harold. When he was in high school "Toar" was tromping wool which must have been hard to do since he was small for his age. Toar was the name of a character in a comic book that was big, brawny, and muscular. So Harold became "Toar" to many for the rest of his life. Toar was president of his graduation class of 1938.
With the advent of World War II, Toar became a cadet at a naval air school in Minnesota. The Navy found they had too many pilots so the cadets were offered tickets home but would be subject to draft. Toar received his ticket home and was released and reported to the draft board. He was told by Lon Newell to "report to the ranch, your father needs you. Stay there!" And stay there he did. He met and married a local schoolteacher, Sara Wendelken, who was happy to give up chalk dust for prairie dust. To this marriage were born four children: Cathy Ann, Ralph William, Penny Louise, and Susan Marie. The old house on Indian Creek was filled with children, noises and dogs. The corrals and pastures gradually filled with sheep. Fourteen years later a 5th child was born, Harold Geoffrey.
Upon the death of Ida Horman, the family and dogs moved to town and Toar commuted to the ranch. Here the children flourished, as did the sheep. In due time, Jeff became chief operator. Toar was an avid supporter of Ag Business and the sheep industry in particular. He was active in many local, state and national organizations. He was a member and past president of the Western South Dakota Wool Growers Association. He represented South Dakota, and served on the North Central Wool Marketing Corporation Board. He was a member of the Lion Club, a member and past president of the Belle Fourche Community Club, as well as a member of the Butte County Historical Society and he was a Mason. Toar had the uncanny ability to relate to animals. They responded to him as well.
His home was filled with family. Preceding him in death was his daughter, Penny Louise Horman O'Dea, his brother Glen William Horman, his parents Henry William Diedrich Horman and Ida Marie Rosenthal Horman, Sara's parents - Anne Quarnberg Wendelken and Ralph Burton Wendelken.
Toar is survived by his wife, Sara Wendelken Horman; children Ralph and Cheryl Horman of Longmont CO, Cathy Horman Tingey of Belle Fourche, Susan and Gilbert Snyder of North Prairie WI, Jeff and Denise Horman of Belle Fourche; grandchildren, Julie, Rachelle, Craig, Scott, Caren, Cory, Brett, Kari, Kevin, Michelle, Sarah, Katherine, Jennifer, Trey, and Jace; great grandchildren, Kalen, Wyatt, Alexis, Dillon, Sari, Isaac, Isabelle, Ethan, Tyler, Garrett and Vance.
