Funeral services for Gregory Scott Gravning, age 55, of Hettinger, ND, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 22, 2018 at the Centennial Chapel of the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger, ND, with Pastor Kathleen Dettmann officiating. Following a time of fellowship and luncheon, burial will be in the Richland Lutheran Cemetery north of Hettinger.
Gregory Scott Gravning was born Dec 30, 1962 to Terry and Myrna Gravning of Hettinger, ND. Greg passed away in his sleep on the family farm located in Maine Township on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. He died of natural causes. Greg attended Cedar Township Country School for his first 2 years, with his Grandma Gravning as his teacher. He then attended Hettinger Public School until graduation in 1981, riding the school bus 22 miles each way for all those years.
In 1979, Greg was involved in a life-changing car accident that caused him to have a severe brain injury. This resulted in surgery to insert a plate in his head, then extensive rehabilitation to learn how to walk and talk again. But even through all of these obstacles, Greg was able to overcome and graduate with his class! Eventually he was able to be self-sufficient and live on his own. He was only able to see out of one eye and hear out of one ear and had no sense of smell.
Greg attended college in Dickinson, ND and later in Bismarck, ND at BSC. While living in Dickinson he met his wife, Nancy Hruby and they were married on August 14, 1982 in Bismarck. They lived in Bismarck for one year, and then moved to the family farm north of Hettinger. They have two children, Gabriel and Amanda. Greg and Nancy later divorced but went on to become great friends. Greg stayed on the farm for quite a few years after the divorce then later moved to Hettinger for work.
Greg started working in Hettinger at Superpumper, which later became Kum & Go. He worked the graveyard shift for nearly 20 years. Greg enjoyed the people he met and visited with while working. In 2014, he moved back to the farm to help his parents for his remaining years.
Greg enjoyed basketball, camping, fishing, playing cards and visiting with friends. He liked writing poetry, doing crossword puzzles and watching the Minnesota Vikings on TV. His wit, humor and laughter will always be remembered.
Greg is survived by his parents, Terry and Myrna Gravning, Hettinger, ND, son, Gabe (Steph) Gravning, Mandan, ND; daughter, Amanda Gravning, Mandan, ND; two grandchildren, Abram and Abby Gravning; sister-in-law, Libby Gravning, Hettinger, ND; two nieces, Paige (Brandon) Byler, Ellinwood, KS and Kaycee Schwind, St. Anthony, ND; two great-nieces, Madalynn and Charleigh Byler; special friend, Julie Hanson and her daughters, Ivory and Breanna, and various aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother Brian Gravning, his paternal grandparents Melvin and Thelma Gravning, and maternal grandparents Earl and Virginia Meisner.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the Centennial Chapel in Hettinger, ND.
