Gloria Mae was born December 1, 1943, to Erhart and Kathryn Straub in Elgin, ND. Gloria was raised on a farm 13 miles south of New Leipzig, ND, where she lived until she graduated from high school. While growing up on the farm she helped in the house with cooking and baking as well as doing farm chores with the family milking cows, feeding livestock and helping with farming and harvesting. She loved this life, but when she graduated from high school in 1961, she adventured to Glendive, MT, where her sister Arlene and husband Clifford lived.
She got a job at the bus station and babysat on the side. While working in Glendive, she met Charles Burchfield and they married in January, 1963, and she joined him in Germany where he was stationed at the time while in the Army. They welcomed a daughter, Brenda Mae in January, 1968, and remained in Germany for 3 more months. Gloria and Brenda Mae returned to the United States and Charles soon followed. They lived on different bases during this time and they were at Fort Leonard Wood, KS, until Charles was sent to Vietnam. Gloria and Brenda Mae then lived south of New Leipzig, ND, until 1972.
They returned to Hettinger, ND in 1975, where Gloria worked at Anfinson's Farm Store. In 1977 she took a clothing store job in Glendive, MT. Gloria was an active bowler and worked hard for herself and Brenda Mae.
Gloria was offered a job working for Commonwealth Life Insurance Company in 1979, so she and Brenda Mae made a move across the country to Louisiana. This was the beginning of the next chapter of their life. They lived there and adjusted to the new lifestyle of humidity, lots of rain, new found bugs, and food. Gloria met Donald Perot through some friends and they fell in love, soul mates. They married June 24, 1980. They welcomed daughter, Angela Mae in May 1983. They remained in Louisiana until 2002 when Donald agreed to move to Hettinger, ND. When she came here, she worked up at the Mirror Lake Lodge, until she retired in 2023, but continued to fill in if needed.
Gloria was a fun-loving wonderful person who was loved by many. She had a bright smile with a loving personality. She had many hobbies and endeavors throughout her life. She loved to bowl, paint ceramics, draw, crochet bed dolls, pot holders, angels and afghans. She even made several very large Last Supper Wall Hangings and donated some to her churches. She was a wonderful seamstress but had given most of the sewing up in the later years. She sold Avon for over 20 years and had even been an owner of a drive-in diner in Colorado Springs called the Big M Drive In. Gloria also collected angels and copper pencil sharpeners. She loved visiting with friends and family drinking coffee and talking about the good old days when they were all growing up and got together often. She enjoyed a good piece of chocolate and absolutely loved cheese. She was a great cook and loved canning many things. She loved her church family, attending church and potluck Sundays.
Gloria loved spending time with her children and grand-children passing down the stories of when she was growing up and teaching some of her hobbies to them.
Gloria is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Perot; her parents, Kathryne and Erhardt Straub; sister, Arlene Zimmerman; infant brother, Ernest Straub; brother -in-law, Rudy Veitz; nephew, Clifford Zimmerman, Jr.; niece, Ann Vietz; infant niece, Arlis Vietz; and many friends and family near and far.
