Gladys Mae Hirsch was born December 1, 1928 on the family homestead near Isabel, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Jacob and Ella (Bohle) Hirsch. Gladys grew up on the family farm near Isabel and was a graduate of the Isabel High School. On November 2, 1947 she was united in marriage to Robert Jewett in Isabel. Together they began their lives in a sheep wagon while they farmed, and put up hay and herded sheep during the winter months. On December 11, 1949, Robert Jr. was born and the family moved into a new 30 foot trailer house. On June 11, 1953, James was born. On July 7, 1957, twins Jay and Mae were born. In 1960 Robert and his family bought a farm west of Fruitdale, SD. For several years they dairy farmed and raised sheep and cattle. In April of 1991 they sold the farm. Following the sale, they continued farming west of Belle Fourche on Robert's brothers' farm until they moved to Newell in 2001. Robert died November 1, 2004.

Gladys enjoyed working with flowers and for a short time she worked at the Belle Flower Shop in Belle Fourche, which she really enjoyed. She also liked to garden and enjoyed spending time with her coffee group and the church circle. She loved playing cards, especially bridge and pinochle. She was a member of the Newell Christian Fellowship. For the past 6 months, Gladys has fought hard against cancer. During these months she has been a living testimony of having a positive outlook on life, and she has never complained. She has demonstrated faith in action, and she will be remembered for her great love of family and her strong faith in Christ. She loved her family and was proud to be a great grandmother. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Gladys is survived by her sons, Robert Jr. (and Carol) of Grand Rapids SD, James of Craig CO, Jay of Gillette WY; daughter, Mae Jewett of Newell; her mother, Ella Hirsch of Rupert ID; brothers, Arnie (Carol) Hirsch of Rupert ID, Marvin (Maggie) Hirsch of Rupert ID, Robert (Joyce) Hirsch of Heyburn ID; sister, Monie Oschner of Gillette WY; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
