Gladys was the 3rd of 10 children born to Homer and Ethel (Speers) Mann on June 9, 1923 at White Owl, SD. She attended school at White Owl through the 8th grade and finished high school at Owanka, SD in 1941 where she served as Salutatorian. She attended Black Hills Teacher College for 1 year and began teaching in the rural Meade Co schools up till the time she married her partner for life Charles Arneson on Nov. 10, 1945. They spent 42 years together until his death on Jan. 1, 1988. They began their life at Elm Springs, SD where they raised four children on their ranch, Danny, Clyde, Lonnie and Donna. Gladys was an active member of the WTL Club, Elm Springs Church, and Woman's bowling league, Elm Springs card club, Meade County election board and the Rebekah lodge. She was very proud of her yard and her garden and loved to hunt fossils and arrow heads. Her whole life centered around her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids attending as many activities as possible that they participated in. Winter times you would find her outside with a grandchild or two sled riding down in a draw or around her kitchen table playing some type of game. She always had some type of goodie ready when friends showed up. She also served as the local barber for many of the people at Elm Springs. Gladys moved to Belle Fourche in 2001 to an assisted living home where she would be closer to her daughter Donna. She will be greatly missed in the hearts of all who knew her especially her family.
