Frederick Geerts, age 94, of Regent, ND, passed away on Sunday evening, December 28, 2025 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND.
Visitation will take place on Friday, January 9, 2026, from 5-7pm at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Regent, ND, followed by a Rosary and Vigil service beginning at 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
Frederick Joseph Geerts was born on his family farm 5 miles north of Regent, ND to Frederick and Maria Christine (Schueller) Geerts on July 18, 1931. Born the 6th child, he joined 5 sisters. Fred started his education at a Black Butte Township country school at the foot of Black Butte, then spent a few years at St. Mary School in New England while he lived with his sister Bernice and her husband. He finished his 8th grade back at the country school. He then stayed home to help on the farm. On June 7, 1954, Fred married Albina Paul from New England. They began their married life living on the farm with dad's parents. After 2 years, Grandma and Grandpa moved into Regent, and Mom and Dad remained on the farm raising 7 children. Dad was a dairyman and farmer raising barley, oats, wheat and cows. Mom and Dad moved into Regent in 2008, but Dad remained always a farmer, going out to help Jim in any way he could. At age 93, he took a load of grain to town, just to say he did. He climbed Black Butte for the last time a few days after his 84th birthday. He was a determined man. In June of 2025, he suffered a stroke. Even laying in his hospital bed, he would work his arms and legs to keep them moving. He wanted to get out of there, and he did for a few months thanks to the amazing home care given to him by his son, Paul.
Dad was a storyteller, always entertaining whoever was willing to listen. He was a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. He seemed to know everyone around and just mentioning his name to a stranger usually brought a story. He once called a wrong number and talked to the guy for almost 2 hours, in Iowa! He truly could talk to anyone. We learned so much from his stories.
Dad was a faithful man, always putting God and Mass first. When the weather didn't allow us to go to church we said the rosary together. Dad's faith was at the forefront of his life, earning him an honorary life membership with the Knights of Colombus for his years of service.
Dad was not big on I love you's, but he showed his love in so many ways. He often would brag about his children and grandchildren to others, he always asked about the sports or activities they were involved in.
Frederick is survived by his children, Paul, Thomas (Shelly), Brenda (Gary) Steier, Rachelle (John) Wurtz, Cheryl (Jeff) Hewson, Tina (Patrick) Meyer, and James (Christina), 29 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by Albina's remaining family, Cathy Paul, Martina Eckard, Agnes and John Schmitz, Bob and Bev Paul, Frances Paul and Ray and June Paul. He is survived by many friends and family, including Darlene Geerts, and the Names Day group.
Frederick is preceded in death by his wife, Albina, in 2012, his grandchildren Stephanie and Monte and his daughter in law Janice, his parents and all his sisters. Bernice (Joe) Pechtl, Loretta (Ralph) Wilcox, Dorothy (John) Jacobs, Marie Geerts and Arlene (Frank) Reindel, as well as Albina's family members and members of the Names Day group.
Well done, my good and faithful servant!
