Frances Longwood's Obituary
The Memorial Service for Frances A. Longwood, age 97 of Cambria, CA, formerly of Lemmon, SD, will be held at 7:00pm on Sunday evening, June 20, 2010 at the Price of Peace Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
Merle Longwood will officiate with inurnment in Greenhill Cemetery at Lemmon.
Frances Anna (Petik) Longwood was born June 25, 1911 in Berwyn, IL to Vaclav (Jim) and Frances Petik. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to homestead in the Lemmon area. Frances' mother passed away during the flu epidemic while Frances was a young child. Frances, being the only girl, took on many housekeeping tasks while quite young. She was able to attend grade school, although she remembered the difficulty of starting school not speaking any English. She spoke often of one exceptional teacher who, know Frances, had no mother at home and showered her with extra time, caring, and love. This teacher had a lifelong impact on Frances, leading her to dedicate her life to teaching.
Frances graduated from Lemmon High School in 1929 and attended Northern State for one year before beginning her teaching career at Bullhead and McIntosh.
In 1939, Frances married Wilford Longwood. They had two daughters, Bonnie (deceased) and Verna. Frances began teaching in Ravinia, SD where Wilford was Superintendent. The family moved to Eagle Butte in 1959 where Frances continued teaching until her retirement. She felt a special connection with the Indian children. She understood their need for a very empathic teacher as they often spent months away from their fathers and mothers in the agency dorms while attending school.
Frances continued her own schooling earning a Master's Degree from Black Hills Teachers College in 1964. Her teaching career spanned more than 30 years. Frances and Wilford retired to Rapid City in 1975. They remained there until 1991, when health issues required them to move to California to life with Verna. Frances and Wilford enjoyed 53 years of marriage until Wilford's death in 1992. Frances remained at Verna's home until her death in 2008.
