The Memorial Service for Faye Gaugler, age 94 of Lemmon, will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lemmon with Pastor Ed Zimmerman, officiating.
Faye (Arndt-Skretteberg) Gaugler was born in Grant County, North Dakota, on May 26, 1920, the oldest daughter of Josephine (Tangen) and Gust Arndt. She had one younger sister, Ella May. Her dad farmed and times were tough. She started "working out" at the age of 8, helping neighbors with farm and household chores. Despite the tough times, Faye went to school, walking the ½ mile to school every day. She graduated from Elgin (North Dakota) High School in 1938, hoping to teach one day. She did, for one year.
Faye met and married Alvin Skretteberg in 1940. They made their home on the Skretteberg family farm at Shadehill, SD. Her favorite job was driving tractor and working on the farm. She was the #1 farmhand, always saying she would rather work in the field than do housework. Faye was a member of the school board, Lakeside Ladies Extension Club, Rebekah Lodge, was a 4-H leader for years, as well a friend and neighbor to all. Faye and Alvin had 2 children, Terry and Cheryl. Alvin passed from this life on December 3, 1971. She continued to live on the farm until 1975, when she moved to Lemmon.
A high school friend, Ray Gaugler, caught Faye's eye in 1981, and they were married on August 7. With this marriage, Faye gained 8 step-children, Bobbie, Doris, Carol, Elaine, Roger, Rick, Harold, and Scott. Faye and Ray built a new home in Lemmon and enjoyed their life together, playing cards, bowling, dancing to the Pearly Shells, traveling, and spending time with their combined family. Ray passed from this life on June 12, 1997. Faye continued to live in her home, until failing health caused her to start a life in Five Counties Nursing Home in November of 2010. Staff quickly became her friends, and they enjoyed bantering back and forth. Faye passed from this life on November 24, 2014 at the rich age of 94 ½ years.
Faye was a familiar face around town for many years, waiting tables in several cafes, clerking at the J.C. Penney store, as well as the head baker at the Lemmon Food Store and head cook at Lemmon's school. She loved to bowl, play cards, talk on the phone, drink coffee with a cookie, and entertain family and friends. She will be remembered for her kindness, her smile, and her chipper attitude.
Surviving family members include her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Nancy Skretteberg, Shadehill, SD; daughter, Cheryl Michael, Crofton, NE; 3 grandchildren, Justin, Greg, and Mandy; 3 great grandchildren, Caden, Camry, and Cody; 8 step children, Bobbi Weber, Doris (Paul) Benoit, Carol (Jesse) Farnsworth, Elaine (Curt) Holen, Rick "Deb" Gaugler, Roger (Ardella) Gaugler, Harold (Jodi) Gaugler, Scott (Beth) Gaugler, 23 step grandchildren, and 11 step great grandchildren.
