EVELYN PEARL SHORT was born December 19, 1922 in a sod house on a ranch 10 miles east of Bixby, SD. She was the fourth of six children born to Floyd C. Sr. and Ella Sara Louise (Burdick) Short. Evelyn attended Cottonwood School, Lemmon Elementary, and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1941. She attended college in Brookings before graduating from Bismarck School of Nursing in 1945. She moved to Lemmon where she began nursing in the Lemmon hospital and clinic. She met Mark Nehl and they were united in marriage on February 12, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon. They lived near Keldron where they raised their family together. She also continued to work in the hospital until retiring in the mid 1980's. Her husband Mark passed away on June 21, 1981. Evelyn continued to live at Keldron. She was grateful for the special care provided to her by Gloria and Clifford Engelhorn, Jim and Linda Nehl, Lester and Susan Schneider, as well as long visits with and by other family members, which made it possible for her to remain in her home until December of 2004. Since then, she has resided at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Mott. She passed from this life there on Monday morning, March 10, at the age of 85 years, 2 months, 21 days.

She enjoyed riding horse to Cottonwood School with "Big Brother" Jr., playing the piano along with "her daddy" on the violin, singing and playing in various church, school, and social groups. She enjoyed being involved in her children's and family activities, whether is be 4-H, hunting, attending sporting events, or many days having fun at Shadehill Reservoir. She enjoyed working in her beautiful flower beds, sewing, knitting, and quilting. She had very fond memories of rocking and singing to her grandchildren, and watching them grow.

Evelyn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was organist and choir director. In her younger years, she was active in Jobs Daughters.

Surviving family members include her children, William (Shirley) Struble, Rapid City, SD; Susan (Lester) Schneider, mcintosh, SD; Mike (Cheri) Nehl, Belle Fourche, SD; James (Linda) Nehl, keldron, SD; Thomas (Evie) Nehl, Upton, WY; Joseph (Vickie) Nehl, Worland, WY; Richard (Bonnie) Nehl, Kalispell, MT; 14 grandchildren, Mark, Tami, Seth, Sonya, Justin, Jason (Jen), Jessica (Dan), Matt (Sara), Tina, Nick, Minnie, Erin (Terry), Amy (Mykle), and Ben; 8 great grandchildren, Payton, Coy, Josh, Jerral, Olivia, Mason, Clayton, and Eva; 1 brother, Harvey Short, Escondido, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews; and pets, Curley and Murrie, who provided much love and company during her struggle with Alzheimer's since the mid 1990's.
