From her birth, on the family farm 9 miles north of Burt on October 10, 1922, Eva is the 3 rd child of Mike and Rosa (Reichert) Roll's family of 14 children. All of the children were born on the farm by a local mid-wife. Eva went to country school at the Walker Township ¼ mile from their home until the 8 th grade. After the 8 th grade, Eva returned home to help with the chores and the younger children. At the age of 18, Eva went to Billings, MT to work cleaning homes and living in one of the homes she cleaned earning $40 per month.
In 1940, she met her husband, Innozent Zentner at a wedding dance for Aunt Maggie on the farm. They dated for 2 years and were married on November 11, 1942 at St. Placidus. The couple served 85 guests at her parent's home. They were married on the 23 rd anniversary of her parent's marriage. Eva bought her wedding dress in Bismarck for $20, but Innozent had to pay $10 of the dress because her father thought $20 was too expensive.
After they were married, they went to live in Glendive, MT where Innozent worked in the coal mine in the winter and then in the spring he worked in the round-house cleaning the coal bunkers on the locomotive tenders. In June of 1943, Eva's parents called and asked them to move back to the farm to help them out. They moved north of Burt after living the summer with her parents. In the fall, they moved to Burt where Innozent worked in the coal mine in New Leipzig. Innozent's uncle offered two quarters of land in Burt and they bought them. In 1944, that was the first year they farmed the new land with the help of Eva's parents. Then Eva's brother- in- law sold them another quarter of land across from the two quarters.
Eva and Innozent were married for 70 years and raised 6 children, Gary, Rosella, Ardella, Susan, Darby and Marsha. Eva loved their life on the farm. She would welcome company at any time and was well prepared to feed anyone who would eat. She was an avid gardener, she continued to garden massive areas of land and she would can and freeze the abundance of vegetables, not to mention the produce she would give away to family and friends. On the farm she raised chickens, because Innozent liked to eat chicken. Later in life, she began quilting. Innozent would joke that they had so many quilts to keep them warm they didn't need a furnace.
Surviving family members include 1 son Darby (Denise) Zentner, Warroad, MN; 4 daughters Rosella (Wilmer) Zimmerman, New Leipzig, ND; Ardella (Ruben) Dschaak, Hettinger, ND; Susan Scott, Bismarck, ND; Marcia (Jay) Linnemann, Bay Point, CA; 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren; sisters Delores (Marlin) Schneider, Hettinger, ND; Viola Dauenhauer, Billings, MT; Annie Kuntz, Billings, MT; sisters-in-law Norita Roll, Mott, ND; Betty Roll, Mott, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
