Service of Remembrance for Ervin H. Schatz, 80, of Carson, ND will be Monday, May 23, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Elgin, ND. Pastor Larry Ouhl will officiate and lunch will be served
before going to the graveside service at Johannestahl Cemetery north of New Leipzig, ND. Visitations will be from 1:00 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 22 at
the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and one hour prior to the service on Monday morning. A family service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
ERVIN HABERT SCHATZ was born to Henry Schatz, Sr. and Emelia (Karach) Schatz on October 20, 1924 at Elgin, ND. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1942. Ervin then attended 2 years of college in Ministry at Yankton, SD. After returning to Elgin to farm, he married Lydia Grosz on July 7, 1946. He taught for 2 years at a country school and farmed full-time for 20 years. Ervin also worked as a banker along with farming part-time near New Leipzig and Carson for 14 years. He also was the Grant County Auditor for 14 years, retiring in 1995.
Ervin enjoyed his family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, fishing and playing cards. He was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Elgin. Some of his community services were: Trustee on the United Methodist Church, commercial club in New Leipzig, served on the New Leipzig School Board and more recently on the Custer District Health Board. Because of his failing health, he entered the Jacobson Memorial Hospital Care Center in Elgin on January 25, 2005. Ervin passed from this life there on May 17, 2005 at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 28 days.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Lydia Schatz, of Carson; daughter, Betty Roth, of Elgin; son, Bruce and wife Barb Schatz, of Elgin; daughter Joleen and husband Blaine Roth, of New Leipzig; nine grandchildren, Lacy, Brock, Landa, Brandi, Lenny, Bobbi, Courtney, Brianne and Tyler; seven great grandchildren, Zachary, Madison, Alexis, Aidan, Landon, Mikayla and Abrielle; sister, Eunice and husband Norman Schulz, of New Leipzig; brothers, Kenneth and wife Donna Schatz, of Elgin, James and wife Sally Schatz, of Miller, SD, and Henry Schatz, Jr. and wife Bev, of Bismarck; sisters-in-law, Winnefred Schatz, of New Leipzig and Arlene Schatz, of Glen Ullin, ND and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Ervin in death were his infant son, his parents, brothers, Clifford and Emil and one grandson, Chad.
