Ervin Schaaf, 90, Glen Ullin, passed away on February 4, 2024, at Marion Manor Healthcare Center, Glen Ullin. Mass of Christian burial for Ervin will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 11 a.m. Central time.
The Family will be present at the visitation on Friday, February 9, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Central time. The rosary/wake service will begin at 7 p.m Central time.
Ervin was the youngest son born to Mathias and Flora (Emter) Schaaf on August 28, 1933, in rural Glen Ullin, North Dakota.
In 1954, Ervin married Florence Veitenheimer, and they settled on a farm in Glen Ullin, ND. Together, they raised seven children: Connie, Tim, Catherine, Scott, Jeff, Mark, and Corrine. They were married 19 years.
Ervin was working for a farmer in Bismarck when he met Marilyn Materi, who was teaching in Mandan. They married on November 16, 1973, and moved to a ranch in Morristown, SD, where they raised two children, Cody and Trina. They farmed and ranched there, raising horses. In 1992, he began driving school bus, but in 2002, a broken leg led to his retirement.
Ervin and Marilyn moved to a small ranch near Elgin, ND, in the summer of 2007. There, they continued to raise horses until Marilyn's death in 2013.
Ervin loved playing pinochle with friends and family and dancing polkas and waltzes. Another great love of his was raising horses. A cowboy through and through, Ervin enjoyed a good rodeo or horse show. He was a proud member of the American Quarter Horse Association, Glen Ullin Saddle Club, and the Morton County Sheriff's Posse. Above all, though, he loved gabbing with his friends and family, telling stories, and shooting the breeze.
Like a true farmer, Ervin liked to tinker with his farm equipment, constantly improving them. He also tinkered in the kitchen, perfecting sausage and fudge recipes or even Connie's in-law's cheese recipe. Ervin often drank coffee at the "round table" at Joe's Place in Wautaga with his friends. The locals once gave him a shirt he proudly wore, as any German would. It read: I'm a German Saur Kraut.
Ervin is survived by his sister Florence Berger, sons Tim Schaaf; Scott (Michele) Schaaf, all of Mandan; Jeff Schaaf, Sturgis, SD; Mark Schaaf, Trinity, AL; Cody (Keri) Schaaf, St. Joseph, MN; his daughters, Connie (Brian) Kitzan, Hebron; Catherine (Wally) Franklund, Northville, MN; Corrine (Joe) Chapinski, Deadwood, SD; and Trina Schaaf (Jody Ganje), Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Kelsey, Jarrett, Jayden, Mandy, Jasmine, Jeremy, Victor, Casey, and Cadence; two step-grandchildren, Shannon and Mitchell; nine great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Ervin was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; many friends and family; his parents; brothers Ed, Joe, Tony, and Michael; sisters Betty, Anna, Clara, and twins Mary and Theresa, and daughter-in-law, Paula Schaaf.
The family wishes to thank Marion Manor Healthcare Center and their staff members for their attentive care of Ervin.
