Emma Schmitt was born on February 15, 1921 to Jacob and Albina (Bertsch) Schmitt on the farmstead 9 miles SE of Regent. She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Mott; attended rural school in Chilton township and graduated from Mott Lincoln High School in 1940.
Emma worked at the J.C. Penny Store in Mott for two years until the time of her marriage to Clarence J. Kamka on September 27, 1942. They lived on the Kamka homestead northeast of Regent for several years. In 1949 they purchased land 2 miles southeast of Regent and constructed a new farm in that location. In June 1975, a tornado struck the farm and destroyed all of the buildings. They had escaped to a safe area in the basement and were not injured. Fortunately, they were able to move immediately into their house in Regent which they had inherited from Clarence's mother. The following year they built a new home in Regent.
For 20 years, Emma worked in the grocery stores in Regent. She retired in 1982, the same year that they sold their land. Clarence and Emma enjoyed doing various crafts but their favorite leisure activity was fishing, especially Walleye and Salmon. Clarence died on March 9, 1990.
Emma enjoyed her involvement in community events but was especially active in her church. She served on the Faith Lutheran church council, taught Sunday School, and led the monthly Bible Study of the Women's organization for several years. She also organized and directed a Children's Choir in her church. Emma was a faithful volunteer at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mott. She continued to live in Regent until March 2008, when she moved to Bismarck and resided in Assisted Living and Care Centers until her death.
She passed from this life on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck, ND.
Emma is survived by one brother, Rev. Otto (LaVerne) Schmitt, Fargo, ND; one sister, Ida Schmitt, Bismarck, ND; 18 nieces and nephews; a niece and nephew in the Kamka family; and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her parents, Jacob and Albina Schmitt; five sisters, Alma Erlenbusch, Clara Oberlander, Martha Frisvold, Esther and Lydia Schmitt; one brother, Emanuel; and two infant siblings, Henry and Eva.
