EMILIE K. HELFENSTEIN was born April 28, 1911 on the family farm at Coldwater near Ashley, ND to John Jr. and Margaret (Hager) Helfenstein. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith on June 5, 1911. Growing up on the family farm, she helped with the farm work, haying, pitching bundles at threshing time, daily chores, and caring for the horses which were the power at that time. Emilie also worked for area neighbors. She attended a country school near her home and for several years worked for the Jacob J. Woeszner family, which was like a second home. She moved to Mercer, Wilton, and then Martin where her sister lived. She then moved on to New Leipzig where Rev Rudolph Heupel was the pastor. There she met his nephew, Leopold "Leo" Schock who became Emilie's husband on May 9, 1934 at the Stone Church north of Elgin. They began their life together on a farm near McIntosh, SD and in 1936 moved to Deering, ND, then south of New Leipzig and then to a farm north of Carson. In 1944, they settled permanently on a farm they purchased 3 miles south of Leith, ND. They were blessed with four children, and together, they farmed and ranched there for many years. Her husband Leo passed away on February 1, 1974. Emilie continued to live on the farm and operate the place along with the help of her sons.
She was involved in many activities in the Carson, Elgin, and Bismarck communities. She was a vibrant, energetic, young lady at heart, and continued to maintain her driver's license and keep the keys to her car until the age of 92.
Emilie was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin and was active on various committees. She sang in the church choir and in the Elgin and Carson community choirs. She was also a chairperson and volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Grant County Farm Bureau for many years and she substitute taught in a rural area school.
Her hobbies included riding horse, bingo, dancing, her garden and flowers. She enjoyed canning, butchering, and making homemade sausage. She loved to spend time with her grandkids and none of them will ever forget her homemade pickles.
She entered her eternal home on Tuesday, January 15, at the Jacobson Memorial Hospital in Elgin at the age of 96 years, 8 months, 17 days.

Emilie was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will always be remembered, loved and cherished. She has gone from us into a world of peace, quiet, happiness, and of no more suffering. We all loved her and wanted to keep her with us. But the one above wanted her too. We helped her and stood by her to the time she took her last breath. She was a woman whom we all looked upon for strength. Through times of trial and tribulation we all turned to her for help. When we were stumped she always had an answer.
Our parents had all of us children baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and we have carried that on to our own children.
