Emil Kallis was born on January 28, 1929 to Wilhelm Kallis and Louise (Gill) Kallis on a farm northwest of New Leipzig, North Dakota. He attended and graduated from New Leipzig High School in 1947.

In June 3, 1956, he married Nelda Zimmerman. Together, they farmed the family homestead and additional adjacent property until 1992 when they moved to New Leipzig.

Emil enjoyed nature, often remarking on the changes in landscapes during the seasons and the joy he got from listening to various songbirds. Long before the environmental movement or the concept of "creation care" became fashionable, he spoke of his love and stewardship of God's wonderful creation. He also loved learning and passed that love on to his sons. He loved the television program "Jeopardy" and doing crosswords and other puzzles.

Emil suffered a heart attack on November 3, 2010. Surrounded by his wife and sons, he passed from this life in the early hours of November 17, 2010, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Grateful for having shared in Emil's life are his wife, Nelda Kallis, New Leipzig, ND; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard "Leo" and Pam Kallis, Yankton, SD and Wilhelm "Bill" and Shelly Kallis, Cloquet, MN; and four grandchildren, Carter and Calvin Kallis and Tom and Hannah Friedenbach.

Emil was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Adolph, Albert and George Kallis; and two sisters, Emma Reich and Anna Susane Kallis who died in infancy.

Visitations will be on Friday, November 19, 2010, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday morning.
