EMIL HEIM was born February 4, 1910 in a sod house east of New Leipzig, ND to William and Rosa (Tetzlaff) Heim. He attended a local country school and when they opened the Elgin Public School, he went to school there. Emil was united in marriage to Pauline Stern on October 24, 1935 at New Leipzig, ND. They farmed together with his dad and lived on various farms in the New Leipzig area. He drove school bus for the Elgin/New Leipzig School Districts and took on the job of trucking cattle when time allowed. In 1941, they purchased the farm on which they presently live north of New Leipzig. Emil and Pauline farmed and ranched together until semi-retiring at age 62. Emil kept busy on the farm with his cattle. He looked forward to the harvest time of the year. Emil and Pauline also traveled extensively after retirement, seeing much of the United States, including two trips to Hawaii, and two trips to Germany.
Emil enjoyed recalling his threshing years as a steam operator. He purchased a miniature steamer that he restored and as well as numerous other pieces of antique machinery once owned by his father that were placed in the New Leipzig Pioneer Museum. He spent countless hours putting together scrapbooks of the good old days, bringing back many memories of his early years on the farm that he often shared with all of his family He also looked forward to the many evenings when he and his family would play board games, Aggravation and Sequence were two of his favorites. He built a replica of the first Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Heim Homestead, and the Kautz Country School. He enjoyed his many DVDs of old tractors, steamers, trains and traveling. Emil loved listening to CD's of faith and old time music.
His pastime was doing word puzzles and word searches. Emil was particularly fond of his pet rooster and pet horse, "Peanuts", both of whom were his pride and Joy. His favorites times were when the grandchildren and great grandchildren would come and visit during their summer vacations and the children treasured the many stories "Grandpa" would tell about his life.
Emil passed away early Saturday morning, March 29, 2008 at the Jacobson Memorial Hospital in Elgin.
