Visitations will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 31 at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes in Hettinger, north of the Hettinger High School.

ELIZABETH ALICE "Bettie" (St. MARIE) LINDQUIST was born November 26, 1917 at Miles City, MT to Nathan "Saint" St. Marie and Elizabeth "Beth" (Gaylord) St. Marie. Her grade school days were at Hettinger, Bismarck, Minot, ND and Newell, SD. She graduated from Hettinger High School in 1935. Bettie was active in school choir, pep club, declamation and school plays. After high school she worked for the Lindquist Valet Cleaners, Lake View Hotel and Strand Theater. During World War II, while her fiancé, Ray joined the US Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA, Bettie followed and joined the wartime work force serving as a "Rosie the Riveter" for Lockheed Aircraft in Los Angeles, CA.

Bettie was united in marriage to Raymond "Ray" Lindquist on December 19, 1943 in Los Angeles, CA at the First Congregational Church. James and Lucille Clement served as attendants who were family in-laws as well as longtime friends and classmates.

Upon Ray's discharge from the Navy, they returned to operate the Lindquist Valet Cleaners and established the Hettinger Men's Store in partnership with Merle Benson. Ray and Bettie and the St. Marie's purchased Motel Ray (Mirror Lake Lodge) in 1952 and operated it until retiring in 1976.

Throughout their life they enjoyed traveling, taking several trips to the west coast, Alaska, Florida and the New England states. Bettie enjoyed daily walks with her dogs and used her creative talents through sewing, needlepoint and upholstery. Known to many as an impressive storyteller, she channeled her ability into a children's novel called "The Mysterious Turret", which was published locally. She remained active long into her life. Some of her favorite pastimes were swimming, bowling and golfing. An avid baseball fan, she often enjoyed cheering on her favorite teams – the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves. Above all, Bettie loved her family and friends and relished anytime spent with all of them.

She was a member of the couple's bridge club, Order of the Eastern Star, Hettinger Women's Bowling Association, Hettinger Country Club and the First Congregational Church. As a youth, she was a member of the first Boys and Girls 4-H Club in Newell, SD.

Bettie passed away at Hettinger's West River Regional Medical Center on Friday evening, May 28, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, her parents, one brother, Nathan St. Marie and a sister, Duane Ann Livingston.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her daughter, Valeria (Larry) Braun, Milbank, SD; son, Ronald (Anita) Lindquist, Bismarck, ND; five grandchildren, Kelly Braun, Moab, UT, Aaron Lindquist, Watertown, NY, Christi (Richard) Schultz, Grand Forks, ND and Andrew and Scott Lindquist, Spokane, WA. Bettie was fortunate to have five great-grandchildren, Christian and Jenna Braun, Riley Rae Lindquist and twins, Natalie and Noah Schultz. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lucille and James Clement, as well as numerous other in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. A Memorial will be established.
