Elizabeth (Geigle) Huber was born May 4, 1926 at Maple Leaf, S.D. to Henry and Lydia (Kunz) Geigle. She was the oldest of 14 children. At age eight, she started attending the Walker School southwest of Selfridge, N.D., later attending the Dillman School through the seventh grade.
Elizabeth helped her parents on the farm and helped care for her younger siblings until she was 18. When she left the farm, she went to Selfridge where she was employed as a nanny for the Mattson family. She later went to work for Lydia Huber as a housekeeper, where she met Lydia's son and future husband, Phillip Huber.
Phillip and Elizabeth were united in marriage on July 21, 1946 at the parsonage in McLaughlin, S.D. by Rev. Alex Stoozman. Phillip had lived on the Skotvold place northwest of McIntosh with his mother and two brothers. Phillip and Elizabeth purchased the Burke place, continued farming, ranching and operating the dairy and began raising their family. Twelve children were born to this union.
In 1981, they sold the farming and ranching operation and retired, but continued to live on the home place. Phillip passed away on Oct. 30, 2003. The farm/ranch was purchased by their son Richard and Elizabeth continued to live on the home place until March of 2011 when she entered the Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, S.D.
Elizabeth was a dedicated farm wife spending many hours helping with the cattle, farming, and harvesting. She kept an immaculate house and was an amazing cook. Her children were often greeted with the aroma of freshly baked homemade bread, caramel rolls, and apple pie. She made the best strudels, dumplings and kuchen.
In their retirement years, Elizabeth and Phillip spent their time traveling to craft shows selling their kuchen, her hand-embroidered dish towels, and attending household and farm auctions. One of her favorite pastimes was the daily trip to town for coffee and conversation with friends.
She passed from this life on Friday, January 13, 2012 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.
