Edna Ellen Johnson was born on December 4, 1919 in Frederick, SD, to Jacob and Helma (Neuvonen) Johnson. She attended grade school in Frederick and grew up on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Benton Potter and lived and farmed in the Mott, ND area. Four children were born to this union, Robert, Carol, Julie and William.
In 1956 Edna moved to Lemmon, SD, with her children and began working as a family babysitter and housekeeper for the Dr. McDonald family. Edna then began baking at the Co-Op store in Lemmon, but her love of children took her back to babysitting for many Lemmon area families and children. She enjoyed watching them grow and in the late 1980's watched her last daycare "child".
Edna loved the Chicago Cubs and all sports in general, and either watched them on TV or listened to them on the radio. If the Cubs were on, Edna focused all attention to their game. Conversations had to wait until the game was over, and the volume finally turned down. She also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzle and word searches, and especially spending time with her family and grandchildren. They meant the world to her.
Edna passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon.
She is survived by her daughter, Julie Wheeler, Lemmon, SD; son, Robert (VeRene) Potter, Lemmon, SD; son-in-law, Jack Rafferty, Lemmon, SD; 11 grandchildren, Mike (Becky) Erickson, Laura (Cale) Rafferty, Debbie Rafferty, Doug Rafferty, Deanna (Doug) Jilek, Melissa (Henning) Sondergaard, Shawn Potter, Buffy Potter, Steve (Keri) Potter, Somar Austin and Grant Austin; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Elmer Johnson, Yuma, AZ; and one sister, Eleanor Murray, Martinez, CA.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; one son, William Potter; one daughter Carol Rafferty; four great-grandchildren; two brother and two sisters.
