Edmund Alvin Klein was born October 8, 1924, at Mott, ND to Edward and Louisa (Luithle) Klein. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Mott in the Neuburg Community. Edmund attended country school and at an early age began working on the family farm. Farming would become his lifelong profession. He was united in marriage to Edna Haberstroh on June12, 1947, and they celebrated 60 years of marriage this summer. To this union four children were born, Lloyd, Harlan, Beverly, and Margie. The couple lived with Edmund's parents on the farm for a couple of years and then moved to the Gross farm. In September of 1951, they purchased the Ted Huber farm north of Elgin and later added the Nuss farm to their acreage. Edmund and Edna farmed and ranched together and continued to expand their farming and ranching operation. Edmund also enjoyed a second love, tinkering with anything mechanical. He was often asked to do mechanical work for area neighbors. Edmund also enjoyed construction work and was instrumental in the building of several commercial business places in Elgin such as Our Place Café and Lanes, Jude's Prairie Mart, numerous grain bins and farm storage buildings. He enjoyed gardening and was proud of his watermelon and pumpkin patches. His enjoyment of farming and repairing have been passed on to his grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as his strong work ethic. Upon his semi-retirement in 1999, he began restoring antique Minneapolis Moline tractors. In addition, he enjoyed visiting with friends, playing cards, listening to old time music, and dancing to the music of Tony Weber, Eddie Praus, and Rocky and the Happy Valley Gang bands.
