Edith Smolnikar, 106, of Hettinger, ND passed away on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Western Horizon's Care Center in Hettinger, ND.

Edith Smolnikar was born to the Almond family in 1911. She grew up and attended school in southeast South Dakota. After attending college for one year, she taught in rural schools in South Dakota.

When she was teaching in Harding County, she met and married Matt Smolnikar. They lived in North Dakota until they purchased a farm in Harding County. They had three children. She continued to live there after Matt died. In her retirement years, she spent the winter months in an apartment in Hettinger. After her son retired to the farm, she lived with him until she could no longer get around. She moved to the nursing home in Hettinger at that time.

Edith planted a large garden every spring. Her family enjoyed a variety of fresh vegetables in the summer. She canned or froze vegetables for use in the winter. Many times she gave the surplus vegetables to neighbors.

Edith was an accomplished crocheter and knitter. She make beautiful afghans, bedspreads, and tablecloths for her children. She donated crocheted items to the auction her church held each fall. These items were prized highly by the bidders.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband, a son, a stillborn son, and her siblings. She is survived by two children, two grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
