DuWayne was born on April 25, 1931 in McIntosh, SD to Ole and Lena Olson. He grew up in Grant County and attended grade school at the Parks School and the Maher School. He went to his first two years of high school in Mitchell, SD and finished in Bismarck, ND. At about the age of ten his family moved north of McIntosh, SD to what is presently the Olson Ranch. DuWayne enjoyed this lifestyle and continued working with his father in the ranching business.

Because they were once neighbors and had attended grade school together, DuWayne Olson and Alice Hilsendager knew each other early in life.   Alice once said that as a young girl she was not interested in him, but he was persistent.  He began courting Alice and often flew his family's Piper Cub plane to go see her.  His efforts paid off and on June 5, 1952 they were married in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morristown, SD.  They moved to the Ole Olson ranch and into an 8' X 26' mobile home without electricity or running water and began raising their family. In 1954 Ole and Lena moved into town and DuWayne and Alice moved into the house. They stayed busy milking cows, tending a large garden and raising chickens, red angus cows and children. Children include Peggy, Douglas, Mary, Timothy, Patricia, and Bradley. They were raised feeling love in the home, being able to have fun, but knowing the importance of honesty and a job well done. DuWayne and Alice remained on the ranch until 1989 when they built a home in McIntosh, SD.

After retirement they enjoyed fishing, traveling, visiting friends and especially spending time with their children and grandchildren.  Even after moving to town DuWayne continued to help his son Brad work cattle and put up hay and often bunked at the ranch.  DuWayne was an active member of St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church and served on the parish council and cemetery board.  For many years he tended to repairs and kept the church in good running order seeing to anything that needed to be done.

DuWayne was known as a prankster.  This started at an early age when he began playing jokes on his sisters and it continued throughout his life.  It has been told that sister Vivian once found a baby chick on her breakfast plate perched on top of her farm fresh eggs. He had a great sense of humor and kept everyone guessing. This is a trait he has passed on to his five children, especially his sons.  His kids and grandkids will always remember him shaking his finger at them and the grin he had on his face when he did so.  Even the staff at Five Counties Nursing Home will remember DuWayne for his quick wit and sense of humor.

Even though DuWayne was quite a prankster, he will be remembered most as a kind and gentle man. He was thoughtful, caring, polite and very considerate of others. He put his family and friends before himself and would do anything for anyone.  He was a true gentleman with a big heart and will be missed by many.

DuWayne passed away on Monday morning, September 17, 2018 at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon.

Grateful for having shared his life are his 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Belinda Olson, Avon, MN; Tim and Sherri Olson, Lovelock, NV; Brad and Nancy Olson, McIntosh, SD; 2 daughters and one son-in-law, Peggy Morris, Redfield, SD; Patricia and Mike Schmaltz, Hettinger, ND; 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Vivian (Quentin) Heid, Mobridge, SD; Doris Felton, Pleasanton, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
