Dorwin Howe, age 89 of Hettinger, passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021 at Western Horizon's Care Center in Hettinger.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hettinger Lutheran Church in Hettinger, ND.  Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at the Hettinger Cemetery.

Dorwin was born on February 8, 1932 on the family farm south of Bucyrus, ND at the site of what is known as Golden Butte to Otto L. Howe and Leona F. (Shields) Howe.  In 1938 the family moved to the present farm where he resided until his passing.  He attended elementary and high school in Hettinger, ND.  During his high school years, he participated in football, basketball, band and "mischief".  He was also a member of the FFA judging team.  In 1950 Dorwin, his brother Arlo Howe and cousin Bruce Howe judged at the Little International in Fargo, ND, taking first place in the competition.  He graduated from Hettinger High School in 1950.  In the fall he enrolled at Spearfish Teachers College.  His college education was interrupted by a notice from Uncle Sam during the Korean Conflict.  He joined the US Navy in January of 1952.  He trained at Great Lakes Naval Station where he achieved the rank of Radioman 3 rd Class.  He was assigned to serve on the USS Palau CVE22 for one year.  He was then transferred to the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea CVA 43 where he served until being honorably discharged in 1956.

Dorwin returned home to farm with his father, Otto.  He met Isabelle Deavy at the Hettinger Theater in the summer of 1956 and they were married in 1957.  They enjoyed 63 years together.  To this union four children were welcomed.  Roxanne, Jeffrey, Kimberly and Michael.  They continued to raise their family on the family farm enjoying having Grandfather and Grandmother within walking distance.  In 1976 they purchased the farm from his parents.  His joy in farming was raising Angus cattle following in his father's footsteps.  Going to bull sales was top on his list.

Dorwin enjoyed golfing, being a basketball referee and bowling.  He was a member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association, the American Legion, the American Angus Association, Adams County 4-H leader, served on the ND State 4-H council and participated at the Adams County Fair, serving as Ringman for several years.  He was a founding member of the Hettinger Ham Radio Club; his call sign was K0LOU.

In 1984 he received the Adams County Soil Conservation Award and in 2008 was awarded the ND Commercial Angus Breeder of the year award.  Dorwin was a member of the Hettinger Investment Club.

Dorwin and Isabelle were able to enjoy winters in California along with his brothers and sisters, six in all where they enjoyed being together visiting and reminiscing about the good old days.  As his management duties lessened, he could be found at the various coffee gatherings with his coffee buddies, discussing "world peace", the amount of rainfall and playing the number game to see who could be stuck with buying coffee.  He enjoyed these groups as much as anything, except for his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  They truly were the joy of his life.  His family was the most important part of him.

Grateful for having shared in Dorwin's life are his wife, Isabelle, daughters, Roxanne Engebretson and Kimberly (Johnny) Despeaux, sons, Jeffrey Howe and Michael (Elaine) Howe, grandchildren, Jeff (Beth) Engebretson, Katie (Kyle) Wimmer, Sam (Will) Uhrig, Kelly (Stephanie) Howe, Taylor Howe, Rhett (Katie) Despeaux, Rachel Despeaux, Lauren (Michael) Munley, Victoria Despeaux, Lucas (Jami) Simonsen, Tiffany (Shaun) Thompson and many great grandchildren.  Dorwin is also survived by his brothers, Norman (Betty) Howe, Arlo (Erkle) Howe, sister, Kaye (Don) McCarthy, sisters-in-law, Gayle Howe and Vita Kok and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Leona Howe, brothers, Donald and Lynn, sisters, Maxine and Joyce and an infant brother, Alfred.

A special "Thank You" to all of his coffee friends that looked after him these last years.  He enjoyed every day he could be with you!
