DOROTHY JEAN PETERSON was born on April 26, 1933 at Marmarth, ND to William and Eva M. (Timm) Peterson. Dorothy's father was killed in a railroad accident when she was six months old. She was raised along with three older brothers, one older sister, an aunt and an uncle by her mother. Dorothy attended grade school and high school at Marmarth. She was captain of her high school basketball team and graduated as Valedictorian of her class on May 18, 1951. On June 26, 1951 she was united in marriage to Robert C. Powell at Baker, in a double ring ceremony with her brother, George Peterson and Joan Tatro, in Baker, MT. Robert and Dorothy were happily married for 55 years. They honeymooned at the I.E. Bratcher ranch south of Mott, ND, and never left until they retired to Hettinger, ND in October of 2003. Their first daughter, Dixie Lee was born on July 4, 1952 and their second daughter, Echo Lynn was born on February 8, 1955. Dorothy and Bob lived at the Bratcher ranch raising registered Hereford cattle and farming.
She served her community as a clerk for the Pleasant Valley School District and as treasurer for the Ashby Township for many years. There was always a warm welcome and a pot of coffee on for who ever dropped by. Dorothy's passion was first for her husband and family. She helped Bob raise and take care of the cattle as well as other animals, including a raccoon, mules, peacocks and longhorn cattle. She had a green thumb and grew beautiful flowers and houseplants. Her greatest joy was cooking for her growing number of grandchildren and great grandchildren during the holidays and always had a jar full of homemade pickled eggs, as they expected her to have. Dorothy was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2005 and courageously went through treatments until she lost her brave battle on Thursday, October 19th, 2006 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger surrounded by her husband and her family. She will always be remembered as a faithful, loving mother, grandmother and friend to all.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Robert, of Hettinger and daughters, Dixie Lee Kilzer, of Mott, ND and Echo Lynn Bohl, of Hulett, WY; grandchildren, Denim Pekas, of Hettinger, Sierra and Scharlie Kilzer, of Dickinson, ND, Kayla and Levi Kilzer, of Mott, ND, Brandy Dalton, of Forsyth, MT and Nikki Gilchrist, of Mill A, WA; great grandchildren, Chase Kilzer, Miami Pekas, Tristan Pekas and Aiden Dietz; and several cousins, nephews and nieces and many friends.
