Beloved Sister, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Dorothy Lillian Hauge passed away on November 26, 2024, at Mandan, ND. Dorothy was born on March 9, 1923 to Dean and Roaine Scholes, the 4th child of 10. The family moved from Armor, South Dakota around 1917, buying a farm near Paradise Flats south of Carson, North Dakota, and lived in a sod house the first year. Dorothy attended a one room country school where some of her most vivid memories are of the winter trips to the country school in a horse drawn wagon and being so cold when she arrived. She spent two years of high school in Carson where she worked for a farm family for room and board, and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1941. Later Dorothy became Grant County Queen during the Grant County Fair. She taught school for one year, and worked as a bank teller in Lemmon, SD where she met a good looking and sometimes stubborn Norwegian, Ardath Hauge, and they were later married on January 8, 1944 in Carson. They purchased their own farm in 1946, where they worked very hard to make it a special home for themselves and their four children. In 1968 they were the winners of the Grant County Soil Conservation Achievement award. Dorothy was an excellent gardener, and worked hard raising chickens and milking cows, but her pride and joy was her yard and flowers and wherever she lived her yards were showcases. She was also a wonderful seamstress, making many of her children's clothes including her daughters' prom dresses. Dorothy was very involved in Grant County Homemakers, Bethesda Church Ladies Aid, Bethesda Bible School, Sunday school and many church suppers including the annual Lutefisk and Lefse suppers the church ladies prepared, and Green Meadow 4-H club. Ardath and Dorothy retired to Carson in 1982, and after Ardath's death, in 1992, Dorothy continued to live in Carson staying active in the Carson meals program. Dorothy was also an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining her family and friends for birthday parties and coffee parties. In November of 2019 she moved to assisted living in Mandan, ND and made many new friends, and embraced life, as she always had.
She is survived by her sister Lucile Thornton, brothers Jim Scholes, Al (Becky) Scholes, children Cyndi Tingey, Audrey (Brad) Hill, Tom (Becky) Hauge, grandchildren Kris (Jess) Burlason, Scott Musgjerd, Sara (Mark) Roberts, Eric (Jenn) Jans, Carly (Keith) Berry, and Stuart (Ginny) Hauge, great grandchildren Jadyn and Jillian Estrada, Jackson, Trajan and Reagan Jans, Rowan and Quinn Berry, Ayden, Arianna, Eli and Kiley Hauge. Dorothy was preceeded in death by her husband of 48 years, Ardath, her daughter Diane Hauge Hooper, and grandson Jordan Hauge.
Even though small in stature, she was a force with which to be reckoned. Her family and friends will remember her for her amazing hospitality on the farm and at her home in Carson, her enduring faith, and love of family and God.
