Donna was born on March 12, 1941 in Lemmon, SD to Albert and Geneva (Wanstedt) Hornung.  She attended White Deer School south of Keldron.  At the age of 12, she contracted polio and spent time in the Hot Springs Children's Hospital recuperating.  Donna graduated from Lemmon High School in 1959 and continued her education at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN where she received her Medical Technologist degree.  After graduation, she worked at Charles T. Miller Hospital for 2 years.  Donna decided she wanted to see the world, so she joined the Peace Corps for 2 years.  She was stationed in southeast Asia, on the island of Borneo. Upon fulfilling her commitment with the Peace Corps, Donna returned to Charles T. Miller Hospital to work for another year.  Again, the "travel bug" appeared.  This time she went to London, England to work at Whittington Hospital for one year.  Donna then moved to Hamburg, Germany where she worked at a research lab for 12 years and traveled Europe presenting research findings.  Donna returned home to work at West River Hospital for 25 years before retiring.

In 2019, Five Counties Nursing Home became Donna's new home where she resided until her death. Donna enjoyed conducting devotional sessions for the residents and served as Resident Council President.

Donna was a woman with a strong faith and was an active member of the Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church where she held various positions at the local and state level.

Grateful for sharing her life are her nieces and nephews: Carolyn (Larry) Hendricks, Sturgis, SD, Jim (Nancy) Maier, Elgin, ND, Dennis (Tina) Maier, Morristown, SD, and Nancy (Bruce) Kappes, Aberdeen, SD;  nine great nieces and nephews and their spouses; and 11 great great nieces and nephews.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Milton; her sister and brother-in-law, Corrine and Ray Maier; and her niece-in-law, Marie Maier.
