DONALD EUGENE MAIER was born on September 3, 1939 in Hettinger, ND.  He was the second child of four born to Jacob and Martha (Lutz) Maier.  He grew up in Haynes, ND on his parents' farm and attended school in Haynes.  He was active in many sports including track, football, baseball, and basketball.  Don graduated from Haynes High School in 1958.

Following his graduation from high school, Don enlisted into the US Navy on June 10, 1958 and served four years on a Destroyer ship.  He was a 2nd Class Machinists Mate and made several trips over seas during his time in the Navy.

While he was still in the Navy, he came home on leave and was united in marriage on December 16, 1961 to Lila Mae Hendricks, the daughter of William and Kate Hendricks.  The Maiers returned to Long Beach, CA where Don finished his time in the Navy and was discharged on June 11, 1962.  Three children were born to this union, Cheryl, Randahl, and Dennis.

Most of Don and Lila's working years were in California where Don worked at the University of California in Davis, and later for the John Taylor Fertilizer Company as a consultant.  In 1980, they purchased the Maier farm near Haynes which they continued to operate until his health began to fail in 1988.  They returned to California and then returned to Hettinger in 2005 where they spent their retirement near their children and friends.

Don loved fishing and hunting and took his family on many wonderful vacations.  He always had a nice garden and many pretty flowers.

Surviving family members include his wife of 61 years, Lila; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Paul Roehl, Bismarck, ND; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Randahl and Michele Maier, Rapid City, SD, and Dennis and Lisa Maier, Hettinger, ND; 9 grandchildren, Jason Roehl, Stacey (Dusty) Weinreis, Zach (Aspen) McLain, Ashley (Matt) Olson, Justine Guglielmelli, Jessie Maier, Joshua Maier, Kenneth Beckman, and Cassandra Beckman; 11 great grandchildren, Ashlynn, Bristol, Riggs, Dylan, Dominic, Logan, Liam, Kloe, Dax, Madison and Asher, 1 brother and sister-in-law, Leland and Marilyn Maier, Canada; and brother-in-law, Don Lindemann; Bismarck, ND.
