David Bartholomew, age 68, of Lemmon, SD, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND. Funeral services for David will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 10, 2025 at the Prince of Peace Chapel of the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon, SD. Charlotte Kvale will officiate with burial to follow in the Greenhill Cemetery.
David was born in Lemmon on October 22, 1956 to George and Grace "Bessie" (Whitney) Bartholomew. As one of the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters, he and his family were deeply involved in the Lemmon community. He took after his father, who ran the Lemmon drug store for many years, and worked as a pharmacy technician for much of his life.
After graduating from Lemmon High School, David served in the United States Air Force in locations ranging from Texas to Alaska to Colorado. In Texas, he raised two boys, Aaron and Keith, before returning to his roots in South Dakota after they graduated high school.
David married Dorothy (Rennich) in 2020, and the two enjoyed several joyous years together in Lemmon. They especially enjoyed watching Lemmon High School football and basketball games, and taking in concerts at the Shadehill Recreation Area.
David was widely known as an avid, talented, and unusually lucky hunter and fisherman. Throughout his travels, he collected trophies of many species, including Dall sheep, caribou, and halibut in Alaska, elk in Colorado, and countless white-tailed deer and walleye in South Dakota. David never forgot—and only sometimes embellished—the stories of his many hunting adventures. He was always eager to spin a tale of cherished outdoor memories, especially those he shared with his brothers and sons. Even in his final days, he and his brothers laughed while sharing stories of their foolhardy antics as young men.
David's love for the outdoors extended to all aspects of his life. Hunting and fishing were through lines of everything he did. He loved cooking, especially incorporating wild game into old family recipes. A visit from David was no doubt accompanied by gifts of homemade venison sausage or smoked walleye. He artfully crafted his own fly fishing lures, sometimes for himself, but often given away as thoughtful, handmade gifts.
David gave selflessly of his time and talent. He never hesitated to help others, without a thought for himself. He was always a supportive husband, father, brother, and friend. He volunteered for many community initiatives, notably sharing his love for hunting with the next generation at Lemmon's annual Pheasants Forever banquet.
David is survived by his wife Dorothy, siblings Ralph and Fern Bartholomew, Chuck and Leslie Bartholomew, Ken and Twyla Bartholomew, Don and Sue Bartholomew, Marie Wolbach, Susan Schopp, Teresa Bartholomew, Ron and Barb Rennich, Norman and Darlene Rennich, and Jerry and Mary Rennich, in-laws, Linda Bartholomew and Larry Fritz; sons, Aaron and Keith Bartholomew, stepchildren, Mike and Alena Rennich, granddaughters Allison, Elizabeth, and Kathleen, and many nieces and nephews.
David is preceded in passing by his parents George and Grace, and siblings Bill Bartholomew, Tom Bartholomew, and Jean Fritz.
