Obituary

Darryl Helland, 83, a long time Adams County, ND Farmer and Rancher passed away on June 15, 2025 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND with his family by his side.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. MT on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon, SD.

Private Family burial will take place at Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon, SD at a later date.

Darryl Adison Helland was born on February 21, 1942 to Julius and Clara (Paulson) Helland.  Darryl attended Spring Butte School just one mile south of the their family farm through 8th grade.

Darryl worked beside his dad in the shop from age 5, welding and building things.  He was known for being able to fix anything.  Over the years many neighbors and friends would ask him for advice or had him help fix things.  There was never a thought of buying something, he would just make it.  He made his own feed racks, farm and ranch equipment, tools, cattle tub, combine headers and many other items.  His mind was always thinking of what to fix and how to fix it up.  He always had many projects on his mind right up until he left us.

Darryl met Helen Kane from Keldron, SD and married the love of his life on November 23, 1963 in Lemmon, SD.  Darryl worked as a plumber until they bought their first farm on the Cedar River and began farming and ranching.  In 1978 they moved back to Darryl's parent's farm where they resided until he passed.

Darryl and Helen had two daughters that they raised on the farm.  Shari was born in 1971 and Stacy was born in 1973.  Darryl would make the girls things such as a diving board in the middle of the lake, box kites, igloos in the winter.

Darryl was a man of few words, but a voice of reason and ingenuity.  He enjoyed country western music, coffee, a burnt hot dog, juicy burger, Pepsi, snickers and a hot hamburger plate.  He embraced his Norwegian heritage and often told Norwegian jokes, or was joked about, and was often referred to as "Lars."  Darryl liked to play practical jokes and had witty comebacks and comments, often to his own expense.

In his later years Darryl enjoyed going to the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag MN, playing bingo (and winning often), gardening with mom, and going to The Norsk Hostfest in Minot, ND to listen to music.  Darryl and Helen are elated to have their two grandsons, Mason and Alex Whitmer, and were overjoyed to be in and follow their lives growing up and will forever hold a dear place in their hearts.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Helen (Kane) Helland, Lemmon, SD, daughters Stacy (James) Whitmer and sons Mason Brooks and Alex Dean of Glendive, MT and Shari (Dennis) Evenson of McIntosh, SD.

Darryl was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Clara (Paulson) Helland, an infant sister, brothers Vaughn Helland and Eugene Helland, and sisters Marcene Robison and Donna Engraf.
