Dane Robert Wendland was born July 20, 1940 in Glenham, South Dakota. He was the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Steiger) Wendland. Dane grew up on a family farm near Glenham, and graduated as the class Valedictorian from the Glenham High School. On December 17, 1961 Dane was married to Renada Diedtrich in Selby SD. To this union, two daughters were born – Valynn and Renee. Following their marriage they lived in Mayville ND where Dane worked at a lumber yard. During this time he served in the U.S. Army National Guard. Upon his father illness, Dane moved the family to Hot Springs so that he could help care for his parents. In 1966 the family moved to Belle Fourche where Dane worked for Lampert Lumber, and Bud Anderson Construction, doing the finishing carpentry work. For 27 years Dane worked for American Colloid in the field department, where he learned to do just about everything. In 2005 he was forced to retire due to health concerns. For two years, Dane and Renada owned and operated the Penguin Drive Inn in Belle Fourche, where many fun memories were made.

Dane will be remembered for his smile and laugh and his great sense of humor. He was fun to be around and always carried a great attitude, even during his sickness. He was a member of the Moose Lodge for many years, and he served in every officer position there was. He enjoyed playing horse-shoes as well. Memories of fishing, camping, and taking family trips together will be remembered forever. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and he will be greatly missed.

Dane is survived by his wife Renada of Belle Fourche; daughters, Valynn (Doug) Mednansky of Belle Fourche, Renee Shoemaker of Castle Rock CO; 5 grandchildren, Aaron, Eric, and Michael Mednansky, Allison and Nathaniel Shoemaker; and brothers, Jerry (LaVonne) Wendland of Black Hawk, and Arle Wendland of Lead. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Alma Diedtrich of Selby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald and Loren Wendland; and sister-in-law, Marlis Wendland.
