Funeral services for Dan Baumgarten, age 76, of Lemmon, SD, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon, SD.  Clark Johnson and Pastor Mary Peterson will officiate with burial to follow in the Greenhill Cemetery at Lemmon.

Daniel Lee Baumgarten was born to Harry and Helen-Lemke Baumgarten on 8/24/1943 in Lemmon, SD.  He was born and raised in Lemmon.  He graduated in 1961 from Lemmon  High School.  He attended School of Business in Aberdeen, SD.  He returned to Lemmon and started his 50 year career in banking at Bank of Lemmon/Dacotah Bank.  He married Jean Marie Larson of Minneapolis, MN on December 17, 1966 in Lemmon, SD.   In 1970 Chad was born and Danelle in 1973.

Dan and Jean fostered numerous children over a 15 year period.  Through fostering they adopted Delvin, Lance, Kaylyn and LaRae.   He was a lifelong member of Calvary Luther Church in Lemmon.  Dan served on the Lemmon Fire Dept. for 21 years.   He served as Chief and Fire Chief for several years.  He continued to volunteer when needed and support the Lemmon Fire Dept over the years.  He was very proud of Chad for continuing on the service for the local community.  He was a member of the local Lemmon Jaycees as well as on the State Board.  Dan was a huge supporter of Lemmon and the surrounding communities.

He started working at Bank of Lemmon 1962.   He started as a teller and retired as the President of Dacotah Bank in 2012.  Through the years at the bank he developed many business and personal friendships.   He also supported the local school and sporting events.  You could always spot Dan on the sidelines of the football field on the chain gang or sitting in the stands of basketball games cheering.

Dan loved to hunt and fish with his family and spending time at Shadehill Lake.   He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and traveled long distances to make it happen.  His children and grandkids were his pride and joy.  Whether family or friends he was always there to help.  He always had words of encouragement, but he would tell you otherwise if that was the case.  Dan passed away late Thursday evening, November 7, 2019 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Jean, Lemmon, SD; three sons, Chad (Celena) Baumgarten, Lemmon, SD, and Delvin and Lance Baumgarten; three daughters, Danelle (Kelly) Walker, Miles City, MT, Kaylyn (Stephen) Barker, Aberdeen, NC and LaRae Baumgarten, Lemmon, SD; grandchildren, Drew (Taylor Jones) Senger, Jaden (Kaitlyn Perkins) Senger, Jax Walker, Lyndse (Jacob) Shockley, Brandi (Ben Stoddard) Baumgarten, Preston Baumgarten, Elijah Baumgarten, Kylie Baumgarten, Aleyna Baumgarten, Stephen Barker, Isabella Barker, Kelis, Tashena, Carter and Alexander; one great-granddaughter, Mia Shockley; sister, Beverly (Jay) Erchul, Hot Springs, MT; sister-in-law, Mary Baumgarten, Rapid City, SD; half-sister, Esther Carmichael, Lemmon, SD; and numerous nieces and one nephew.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harry Baumgarten; one sister, Rosella Baumgarten in infancy; and one great-nephew, Riley Baumgarten.

Visitation will be on Monday, November 11, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon, SD.
