Charles Edward "Chuck" DeFoe, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025, at his home, held close by the love of his family.
Chuck was born on August 19, 1945, in Dickinson, ND, to Clyde Edward "Eddie" and Marion (Knoll) DeFoe. He grew up in Dickinson, attending St. Patrick's Elementary School, Dickinson High School, and Dickinson State College. It was at Dickinson State that he met the love of his life, Janice Peterson — a partnership that would anchor him for more than six decades. In 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged for medical reasons.
Chuck began his banking career in Hettinger in 1969, working at First National Bank and later West River State Bank. He was in banking for 30 years and he always said he met good co-workers and customers who became wonderful friends. Before retirement, Chuck was the Adams County Tax Director, a job that took him to all areas of the county. He thoroughly enjoyed being part of the "courthouse crew" as he called them, a wonderful group of co-workers and commissioners.
Chuck enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren partake in all their activities. He especially enjoyed baseball at the legion field, where he could be found parked by the shed for many years.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Janice DeFoe; his sons, Michael (Deana) DeFoe and their children Brianna and Kasey Groettum (Grace and Lillie), Jacob DeFoe, and Kieran DeFoe; Bryan (Heidi) DeFoe and their children Mason, Tanner, Hayden, and Dawson DeFoe; and by his daughter, Candice DeFoe, and her daughter Olivia DeFoe. He is also survived by his sister, Roberta Butterfield, and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Marion DeFoe; his in-laws, Howard and Pauline Peterson; his sister and brother-in-law, Lola and Bob Thomas; and his brother-in-law, John Butterfield.
Chuck's legacy lives quietly and powerfully in the people who loved him — in the values he modeled, the steadiness he offered, and the countless memories stitched into everyday life. To know Chuck was to feel welcomed, supported, and seen. His presence will be deeply missed, and his memory will continue to guide those who were blessed to share life with him.
