Funeral services for Charles "Chuck" Cain, age 83, of Mobridge, SD will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lemmon, SD. Pastor Charlotte Kvale will officiate with burial in the Greenhill Cemetery at Lemmon.
Charles Wesley Cain was born on September 26, 1928 to W. B. "Jim" and Joyce (Ottman) Cain at his paternal grandparents' home southeast of Lemmon. A short time later, he and his parents moved to Shadehill, SD.
"Chuck" (as he was known) went to Shadehill School except for a couple of years. During these few years, he lived with his Uncle John and Aunt Sadie Cain. Sadie was a teacher and Chuck went to whichever school she was teaching. He later graduated with honors from Lemmon High School. Chuck's favorite sport in high school was basketball. While in high school, he worked at the J.C. Penney Store and helped his father on the farm. Following his graduation, Chuck worked for a construction company that was building the Shadehill Dam near Lemmon and the Oahe Dam near Pierre.
In 1949 he met Betty Krueger, a school teacher, from Wisconsin. The couple married on June 4, 1950 and moved to Lemmon on January 1, 1952. Chuck began working at the Lemmon Coop Station as a mechanic and later became the manager. He retired from that position in 1989.
Each year Chuck and Betty took their family on a vacation and after retiring, they continued to see many other states, including Hawaii and Alaska. They liked the Gulf Coast so much that they spent 9 winters in Port Aransas, Texas.
Chuck dearly loved to hunt and fish and in May of 2000, they moved to Mobridge, SD to be closer to the Missouri River. There, Chuck had hoped to spend many days fishing.
Chuck passed away on Friday morning, December 16, 2011 at his home in Mobridge, SD.
