Carol Janet Gustin established her presence on February 2, 1943, in Hettinger, North Dakota to John and Minnie Gustin. Although premature and shoebox size, Carol was born with limitless determination. Carol had two siblings, an older brother, Richard "Dick" and younger sister, Diane. They grew up on a farm east of Hettinger where Carol lived until her passing.
Carol attended Haynes Public School through 8th grade proceeded by St. Mary's Catholic High School in New England, ND where she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Mollman. Their story began when Carol was quickly leaving her classroom and hit Bill in the head with the door. Bill always joked that he got knocked out and woke up married. They were united in Holy Matrimony on March 3rd,1962. They had a very loving, fun and faith-filled marriage and spent very little time apart, but when they did, they talked on the phone at least four times a day.
At age 8 Carol became ill with Bright's disease. Doctors informed her parents she would never have children. In 1963, the 1st of 10 children was born. She was a very loving and devoted mother. She made each of her children feel special, to the point they each felt like they were mom's "favorite".
Carol brought joy to everyone around her and was well known for her kuchen, sense of humor, and her memorable sayings such as "cuter than a bug's ear", "you little duffer", "two shakes of a lamb's tail", and she was always guaranteed to call you "honey". She loved a good prank, whether it be ripping up tissue paper to stuff in her daughter's purses, tying undergarments in knots, shortsheeting and filling beds with random items, or hiding just one of Bill's socks. As much as she liked pranking others, she equally enjoyed having jokes pulled on her. This endearing quality was most obvious in time spent with her brother and sister where there was always mischief, humor and laughter.
Throughout her life, Carol volunteered her time working at the Hettinger Clothes Closet and food pantry, caring for sick relatives and providing a stable home for multiple "adopted" children in the community. Carol also enjoyed cooking at the Senior Citizen Center and providing not only a delicious meal but also humor and fellowship. Above all else, her most cherished role was caring for husband and children.
Carol loved snacking, heavy whipping cream, Vicks, coffee and sweets. Eating popcorn and dots at the drive-in theatre with her dad and sister was a fond childhood memory and has become a tradition passed down to her children and grandchildren. The well-known blue mailbox on Highway 12 brought joy to all those passing by, and Carol loved receiving complements on the decorations.
Carol had numerous hobbies including raising exotic birds and sheep, gardening, sewing, crocheting and teaching her children the value of hard work. All grandkids and great grandkids were guaranteed to receive a homemade quillow from Grammy C. She also loved collecting things such as spoons, lanterns, bells, butter churns, owls, buttons, marbles, angels, and most recently gnomes to list a few.
Carol's life was strongly defined by her unwavering faith. She spent time with Jesus every morning reading her daily devotionals, praying the rosary, and often attended daily mass. She was an active member the Holy Trinity Alter Society for many years.
Carol passed away peacefully on September 18, 2023, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND surrounded by husband, all 10 children and her sister. She will be missed beyond measure by her devoted husband Bill, her children Daniel Mollman, Doug (Ann) Mollman, Charlene (Tim) Milliren, Jean (Darryl) Dix, Jon (Heidi) Mollman, Scott (Sandra) Mollman, Jennifer Mollman, Beth (Gregg) Kathol, Kelly (Kipp) Gould, and Terri (Jason) Mollman-Larson, 35 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, sister Diane (Richard) Mischel, and dearest partner in crime for over 40 years, Cynthia Erickson.
She was proceeded in death by her parents and brother Dick. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial will be established by Carol's family.
