Burkie attended White Deer country school and graduated from McIntosh High School in 1942. He farmed and ranched with his parents and worked on area threshing crews during the harvest season. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Macheel on June 18, 1948 at Lidgerwood, ND. They began their life together on the Feyreison place that Burkie purchased prior to their marriage. They lived there for 10 years and then moved to the Dix homestead where they continued farming and ranching. In 1985, they retired and moved into Lemmon. In July of 2003, Burkie entered Five Counties Nursing Home and has resided there since.
He passed from this life on Friday, May 25, at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.
Burkie was instrumental in the building of Hope Presbyterian Church of rural Keldron where he taught Sunday School and was an Elder. Later he served as both an Elder and Deacon at Spencer. He was also active on the Rolling Green Township Board and a 4-H Leader. In his earlier years, he was active in high school football, enjoyed playing baseball with the Thunder Hawk team and playing softball with the ABS Bulls team well into his mid 50's.
