Billy Ashley was born March 23, 1931 in Oxford, MS. After graduating high school, Billy enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the U.S.S. Gurke. He served during the Korean War, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal (2 Stars), and China Service Medal.
Billy's history of work took him many places, including CA, MS, OR, AK, SD and ND. While working in SD he met his future wife, JoAnn Zimmerman. They were united in marriage on March 25, 1962. Of all the places that Billy and JoAnn lived and worked, they decided that the best place to raise their five children was in ND.
Upon Billy's retirement they moved to Texas. This allowed them to be closer to their grandchildren, and gave Billy more months of good weather to perfect his bass fishing skills and time to sit outside with his dog and carve his walking sticks.
Billy passed away on Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, TX, where he was surrounded by his immediate family.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn, Kilgore, TX; 3 sons, Steve Ashley, (Kara Duncan), Denver, CO; Todd Ashley, (Karen Anderson), Longview, TX; Mike Ashley, (Lisa), Kilgore, TX; 1 daughter, April Gietzen, (Paul), Waxahachie, TX; 4 grandchildren, Natasha Anderson, Robert Gietzen, Derrick Ashley, Madison Anderson; 1 sister, Sara Anderberg, Shady Cove, OR.
